Description

Legal Industry Experience Required

We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations and help drive the financial integrity of a growing organization in New Jersey. Reporting to and partnering closely with the Head of Accounting, this individual will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, managing cash flow activities, and providing financial insights that support strategic business decisions.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader with strong technical expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and a proven ability to manage multiple priorities while developing and mentoring accounting staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Head of Accounting to oversee the organization's accounting function and ensure accurate, timely, and efficient financial operations.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members, establishing priorities and reviewing work to maintain high-quality deliverables.

  • Manage the full payroll process, including employee updates, deductions, compliance reporting, reconciliations, and coordination with third-party payroll providers.

  • Oversee trust and operating accounts, ensuring proper accounting treatment, reconciliation, and compliance with company policies.

  • Review and monitor high-volume wire transactions and cash activity, ensuring accuracy, security, and appropriate financial controls.

  • Perform and review daily, monthly, and annual account reconciliations to maintain the integrity of financial records.

  • Maintain the general ledger, monitor account activity, and ensure proper account classifications and coding.

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial planning initiatives, providing meaningful analysis of trends and variances.

  • Evaluate and enhance internal controls, risk management practices, and fraud prevention procedures.

  • Coordinate external audits and serve as a key liaison with auditors, banking partners, payroll providers, and other external stakeholders.

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, increase operational efficiency, and strengthen reporting capabilities across the finance function.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, month-end close processes, and internal controls.

  • Experience managing payroll, cash management, reconciliations, and general ledger activities.

  • Proven ability to lead and develop accounting teams in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.

  • CPA designation preferred but not required.
