City Public Defender JOB TITLE: City Public Defender CLASSIFICATION: Exempt DEPARTMENT: Mayor SUPERVISOR: Compliance Director SALARY: $84,250 to $126,376 Annually **GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION ** Under the general supervision of the Compliance Director, p rovide legal representation to indigent clients charged with a crime(s); conducts interviews with clients and witnesses; prepares motions, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents; argues motions before trial court; represents clients at court hearings and trial. **PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ** - Defend Defendants charged with misdemeanor citations being prosecuted in municipal. court. - Analyzes cases and advises clients on the best course of action. - Prepares legal documents and appears at trial on behalf of the client. - Consults with other attorneys in the office to formulate a case strategy, plans for the case, and agency work. - Stays current in legal literature in all aspects of the relevant law to provide current. assistance to clients and staff attorneys, including meeting CLE requirements. SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ** - Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES ** - Ability to manage multiple cases/tasks, manage time, and prioritize tasks. - Knowledge of trial and hearing procedure and rules of evidence - must have the ability to present statements of fact, law, and argument clearly and logically in written and oral form. - Knowledge of criminal statutes, court procedures, and legal research methods. - Skilled in managing a caseload and responding quickly to changing priorities. - Knowledge of substantive and procedural laws in criminal justice, including state, federal, and administrative law. QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB ** Required: State of Wyoming Bar Preferred: One (1) to five (5) years of criminal defense experience. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ** The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Working Environment: Work closely with others in an office environment utilizing a computer and other office equipment. Occasional irregular working hours.
