The Work You Will Do

The Staff Design Engineer, Electrical serves as engineering support for asset renewal, construction and facilities related programs and all individual projects encapsulated in these programs. Provides leadership and direction on all project operations and activities such as the assessment, design, plan, schedule, budget and scope of services. Identifies appropriate strategies to ensure delivery of quality of services with available resources. Provides technical expertise and support and management to FPM as it relates to university requirements and environmental compliance. Interprets federal, state and local regulations to ensure compliance with existing regulations.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Performs a variety of technical projects and engineering assignments (e.g., energy audits, engineering analyses, cost estimates, project standards and specifications). Determines appropriate technical approaches for assigned work, ensures quality of deliverables, monitors implementation activities, and reviews consultant reports and analyses.

  • Coordinates site activities and meetings, and leads data collection efforts, field visits, interviews, documentation reviews, and technical report preparation. Evaluates facility-related documentation (e.g., utility bills, as-built drawings) and provides technical support for facilities-related projects and initiatives.

  • Conducts technical reviews of consultant-proposed designs and specifications and develops recommendations to improve system operability, occupant comfort, maintenance effectiveness, and energy performance. Escalates complex technical issues and recommendations as appropriate.

  • Serves as a technical liaison for assigned projects and initiatives, working with university stakeholders, consultants, and contractors to evaluate solutions based on occupant impact, operational requirements, cost effectiveness, and long-term value. Promotes a workplace culture aligned with the USC Code of Ethics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field(s).

  • Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.

  • 5 years in engineering and/or a related technical/professional field.

  • Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum work experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of technical programs and/or engineering programs.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining standards and procedures.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an exemplary attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated good judgment, analytical, and decision-making skills, able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of building systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting).

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and critical-thinking skills, able to review technical calculations, models, systems and measurements.

  • Demonstrated experience with building systems and local/state benchmarking regulations.

  • Valid CA driver's license required with a minimum of 2 years’ driving experience. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer License (CA) and/or related professional certifications.

  • Proficiency with computer operating systems and relevant applications/software (e.g., Windows, Apple, Adobe).

  • Experience in wide-ranging, collaborative and high-performing teams.

  • Experience managing consultants and/or contractors.

  • Experience with large campus and utility systems.

Salary Range

The annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
