Full job description

About the Role The HDD Locator is responsible for accurately tracking and guiding the directional drill head during underground utility installations. This position works closely with the drill operator and crew to ensure safe, precise, and efficient bore path tracking in accordance with project plans, depth tolerances, and utility clearances.

What you'll do

  • Operate Subsite® or Falcon F5® locating systems to monitor drill head depth, pitch,
  • and direction throughout the bore.
  • Communicate continuously with the drill operator to maintain target line and grade.
  • Mark and record bore path data, utilities, and entry/exit points as required.
  • Interpret plans, profiles, and utility locate information to identify safe drill routes.
  • Perform pre-bore and post-bore walk-downs to identify obstacles or potential conflicts.
  • Calibrate and maintain locating equipment for accurate performance in varying ground
  • conditions.
  • Support setup and breakdown of HDD operations, including mixing fluids, installing
  • tracking wire, and assisting with pullback.
  • Complete bore logs, daily production sheets, and safety checklists.
  • Adhere to company and client safety procedures, including confined-space and
  • excavation standards. What we're looking for
  • 2+ years’ experience in horizontal directional drilling and underground utility
  • installation.
  • Proficient with Subsite® or Falcon F5® locating systems — capable of interpreting and
  • adjusting depth, roll, and pitch readings under difficult signal conditions.
  • Understanding of HDD guidance principles, utility separation standards, and bore path
  • mapping.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, as-builts, and underground utility locates.
  • Strong communication skills and situational awareness in fast-paced field
  • environments.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (CDL preferred).
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift up to 75 lbs. Nice to have
  • Experience drilling in multiple soil conditions (clay, sand, rock, and mixed formations).
  • Familiarity with Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch rigs (especially 24x40 or similar models).
  • Knowledge of HDD tracking interference mitigation and beacon frequency adjustments.
  • OSHA 10/30-hour safety training or equivalent.
