Full job description

Position Summary

The Metal Lab Technician is responsible for performing metallurgical testing, sample preparation, and analysis to support quality control, production, and compliance requirements. This role ensures materials meet internal specifications and industry standards through accurate testing, documentation, and reporting. The role is based in the El Cajon, CA office and will report to the Quality Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare metal samples for testing, including cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching

  • Conduct metallurgical tests such as hardness testing, microstructure evaluation, and chemical analysis

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment (e.g., microscopes, hardness testers, spectrometers)

  • Record, analyze, and report test results accurately and in a timely manner

  • Verify material compliance with specifications, drawings, and industry standards

  • Assist with failure analysis and root cause investigations as needed

  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and safety standards

  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on lab equipment

  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements

  • Support audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Communicate findings clearly with engineering, quality, and production teams

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical certification in metallurgy, materials science, or related field preferred

  • 1–3 years of experience in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory preferred

  • Knowledge of metallurgical principles and testing methods

  • Basic understanding of quality systems (ISO, ASTM, ASME, etc.)

  • Proficiency with measuring instruments and lab equipment

  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, lab software systems)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with optical microscopy and image analysis

  • Familiarity with heat treatment processes and metal alloys

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally

  • Manual dexterity for handling small parts and tools

  • Use of PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and lab coats

Work Environment

  • Laboratory and manufacturing settings

  • Exposure to metal dust, chemicals, and machinery in a controlled environment

  • May require occasional overtime based on production or testing demands
