The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month, Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure) faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Associate Professor to serve as a large animal clinical educator. This is primarily a teaching position with opportunities for hospital-based patient care commensurate with the candidate’s area of expertise. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026.

The successful candidate will have a primary instructional role developing and delivering large animal content and will participate in instruction of the integrated and highly experiential DVM curriculum. The individual will participate in multiple courses, including the Professional & Clinical Skills course, which is contiguous through the first six semesters of the curriculum. In this course students gain clinical skills in the simulation laboratory, professional skills, including communication, ethical decision-making, personal and professional finance, and critical thinking skills through problem-based instruction. Excellence and creativity in education is expected as well as course coordinator responsibilities to support the curriculum. Broad experience in large animal species is desired.

The majority of the overall effort (60-70%) will be dedicated to instruction in the pre-clinical curriculum with the remainder of time (30-40%) divided between clinical service in the Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, academic service, and/or scholarly activities. Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with animal caregivers, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and staff. The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes 50 faculty members with expansive backgrounds and scholarly interests. Faculty members are located at the Texas A&M University campus in College Station and at the Veterinary Education Research and Outreach (VERO) program at the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Primary Care, Equine Sports Medicine, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services, and Diagnostic Imaging. Additionally, the department provides ambulatory service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice animal units through a team of faculty members dedicated to this service.

Pre-clinical training occurs within our Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), a 330,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art educational facility. VBEC is home to a variety of educational venues for lectures, laboratories, small group learning, and an array of hands-on skills training. This complex also houses the Center for Educational Technologies, which provides pedagogical support to faculty for teaching and learning. Our 34,000 square-foot VERO facility was completed in 2020 on the campus of WTAMU in Canyon, Texas, and supports key research and outreach initiatives focused on the livestock industry and service to rural communities in the Texas Panhandle and provides immersive clinical rotations for 4th year students.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Possession of, or eligibility for, a DEA certificate and USDA Category II accreditation is required for applicants desiring patient care responsibilities.

• Patient care also requires applicants to be licensed or eligible for regular or special license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.

• Board certification or eligibility to take a board examination in a specialty recognized by the AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS), including ABVP, is preferred.
