The City of St. Charles Human Resources Department is recruiting for seasonal Passenger Van Drivers for the St. Charles City Transit within the Public Works Street Division. This position is part-time and no benefits are included with this part-time position.

Purpose of Position

The Passenger Van Driver is responsible for providing safe, courteous, and reliable transportation services for residents utilizing the City's transit program. This position operates a passenger van on demand-response trips, assists passengers with boarding and exiting the vehicle, and ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations. The Passenger Van Driver serves as a representative of the City and is expected to provide exceptional customer service while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Safely operate a passenger van to transport passengers to scheduled destinations in accordance with established routes and schedules.

  • Provide door-to-door or curb-to-curb transportation services as required by program guidelines.

  • Assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle, including operation of wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement systems.

  • Safely secure wheelchairs, mobility devices, and other passenger equipment in accordance with ADA requirements.

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-trip, post-trip, and daily vehicle safety inspections.

  • Maintain accurate vehicle inspection reports, mileage logs, passenger manifests, incident reports, and other required documentation.

  • Follow all traffic laws, defensive driving practices, and City safety policies.

  • Communicate effectively with dispatch regarding schedule changes, delays, emergencies, or service issues.

  • Provide courteous assistance to elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and the general public.

  • Maintain cleanliness and appearance of assigned vehicle.

  • Monitor vehicle condition and report maintenance needs promptly.

  • Respond appropriately during accidents, medical emergencies, or passenger incidents following City procedures.

  • Maintain confidentiality of passenger information.

  • Collect fares or verify passenger eligibility if required by program procedures.

  • Attend required training programs, safety meetings, and continuing education.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.

  • Enter and exit the vehicle numerous times throughout the workday.

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.

  • Push and pull occupied wheelchairs and operate wheelchair lifts and ramps.

  • Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, and climb as necessary.

  • Assist passengers requiring limited physical assistance.

  • Work is performed primarily while operating a passenger van in varying weather and traffic conditions.

  • Exposure to rain, snow, heat, cold, and other environmental conditions.

  • Frequent interaction with the public.

  • Vision sufficient to safely operate a motor vehicle and hearing adequate to communicate with passengers and emergency personnel are required.

Minimum Training and Experience Required

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

  • Must possess a valid Missouri Class E driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • Previous passenger and/or public driving experience preferred.
