JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Secondary Principal and Athletic Director, the Athletic Trainer will provide athletic trainer services, first aid care, and emergency services to student athletes.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides students with injury prevention information, evaluation, and rehabilitation of injuries; provides conditions and nutritional guidelines on an as needed basis.

• Attends practices and home athletic events and away varsity football games; develops schedules for contest coverage; coordinates schedules with coaches.

• Attends events with the highest known injury rate; provides on-site management of injuries during practices and home athletic events.

• Monitors student athlete injuries with team physician, coach, and parents; acts as liaison between team physician, athlete, parent, and coach.

• Maintains an active system of accident reports and records.

• Develops an annual budget for equipment, supplies, and materials.

• Manages training room facilities including inventory, ordering, purchasing, maintenance, and recordkeeping.

• Requires flexible work schedule with many evenings as well as travel to various sites and locations.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:

• Must possess current Board of Certification and licensed in Washington State as an Athletic Trainer.

• Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR Card.

Special Requirements: Successful Washington State Patrol check and FBI Fingerprint Clearance Report and Disclosure Statement in accordance with state law.

Preferred: Experience working in Native American communities.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

• Training and work experience (or internship) as an athletic trainer required.

• Knowledge of school district athletic rules and WIAA guidelines.

• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

• Knowledge of mechanics and pathology of athletic injury.

• Knowledge of principals of injury prevention.

• Knowledge of principals and application of therapeutic modalities.

• Knowledge of principals and application of rehabilitation exercise.

• Ability to recognize specific injury conditions.

• Ability to perform supportive bandaging and adhesive strapping techniques.

• Ability to work cooperatively with coaches, student trainers, administrators, student athletes, and parents.

• Ability to handle emergency crisis situations. 12. Familiarity with local hospitals, Medic I, and medical services.

• Ability to build professional relationships and partnerships through effective oral and written communication with Muckleshoot community, school administration, staff, parent or guardians and students.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to school, student and families.

• Ability to work independently, prioritizing workload, and adapting to changes in work load demands.

• Ability to gain the respect and confidence of students, parents and community through modeling of appropriate behavior and independently seeking resources and volunteers to facilitate a variety of sports programs.

• Ability to learn and work effectively with age appropriate students, staff, and volunteers within a native community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

Licenses or Certifications Required

A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
