Full job description

Location: East Chicago, IN

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Mason at our East Chicago, Indiana operation. The Mason is responsible for performing masonry work in plant maintenance and construction. The ideal candidate will have prior steel industry experience, be self-motivated and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations.Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Receives instructions and prints regarding work assignments.

  • Interprets prints or sketches, plans work details, and determines material, and tool requirements.

  • Directs or assists in razing old structures, removing brick and debris from furnaces, stacks, and other facilities.

  • Lays out work or assists in establishing elevations, corner points and base lines on repair and construction jobs.

  • Determines the properties and workability of bonding and ceramic materials and makes allowances for expansion and contraction of masonry work.

  • Directs or assists in setting or removing masonry forms.

  • Exercises all safety precautions and makes provisions for handling materials and equipment to and from job site in connection with performance of work.

  • Directs helpers in mixing concrete and other bonding materials and transporting to the job site.

  • Performs several types of rough and finish masonry work such as laying brick, concrete finishing, insulating furnaces and equipment, and plasters interior and exterior walls.

  • Cuts and fits masonry materials to any form in the erection of structures involving arches, curved or angular shapes.

  • Positions and grouts prefabricated parts such as framework, wearing and cooling plates and masonry hardware to complete the structure.

  • Operates masonry saw for various applications.

  • Labor work - demo masonry walls / refractories, mix mortars for masonry applications, etc.

  • Install refractory gunnite / shotcrete materials.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Completion of a certified training or apprenticeship program

  • Be able to work full-time, including rotating shifts that shall include weekends and holidays.

  • Must pass all required testing.

  • Must be willing to work at heights, work in extreme heat and cold as well as climb and or walk on uneven surfaces.
