Full job description

The Teacher Aide is responsible for the care, supervision, and safety of classroom children. Assist staff in planning and implementing age-appropriate curriculum. Responsible for keeping classroom and playground clean, safe, and orderly. Must have compassion and understanding for the needs of children and families from all backgrounds. Must learn, implement, and follow all program policies and procedures. Encourage self-esteem and independence for the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of each child.

Members of federally recognized tribes receive preference in hiring.

Required Skills

High School Diploma or equivalent, preferred.

  • Have access to reliable, insured transportation.

  • Must have or obtain and maintain CT child care first-aid, child CPR, and medication administration certification.

  • Provide a TVCCA Staff Statement of Good Health statement signed by a physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner completed within twelve (12) months before the date of employment, and every thirty-six (36) months for current staff.

Required Experience

Continue professional development per funding source requirements.

  • Have the physical stamina to interact with children for up to 8 hours; e.g. to move and react quickly to ensure the safety of the children, to lift and/or carry a child, to sit on the floor or use child size furniture, and participate in field trips and playground activities.

  • Work as scheduled; daily attendance and punctuality are required.

  • Work flexible hours.

  • Travel to other centers for coverage.

  • Handle crisis/emergencies in a professional manner.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Follow directions.

  • Prioritize tasks, and apply self as a positive, contributing member of a team.

  • Read, write, and perform basic math skills.

  • Provide evidence of on-going career development.

  • Attend and implement information from workshops, conferences, trainings and formal education.

  • Ensure children’s understanding of safety rules and regulations through consistent reinforcement.

  • Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, and other functions when requested.

  • Maintain accurate up-to-date orderly records.

  • Work with industrial cleaning chemicals.

  • Take on additional tasks as required to maintain program and agency operations.

  • Adhere to TVCCA policies and procedures.

  • Under the guidance of the Head Teacher, complete formal and informal observations of the children.
