Full job description

LOCATION: Special Education – Maywood Academy

BASIC FUNCTION:

In collaboration with the Principal, this position oversees day-to-day building operations, coordinates the comprehensive Special Education and Committee on Special Education (CSE) processes, leads student crisis and behavioral support systems, and assists in the management of student referrals from intake to placement. Acting as secondary in command, the Assistant Principal ensures full compliance with special education regulations, drives staff development, fosters family and district collaboration, and maintains a safe, supportive learning environment in the Principal’s absence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support daily school operations, including student arrival and dismissal, transportation coordination, staffing coverage, scheduling, and overall building management.

  • Collaborate with district CSEs, families, and staff regarding student programming, IEP amendments, annual reviews, attendance concerns, behavioral needs, and other student-related matters.

  • Ensure compliance with IDEA and Part 200 regulations, review draft IEPs, participate in CSE meetings, and support staff in the development and implementation of high-quality, compliant special education programming.

  • Respond to student behavioral and crisis situations through a restorative and trauma-informed lens, including parent communication, oversight of required documentation, staff support, and disciplinary investigations.

  • Work closely with the Principal and Deputy Director to manage a high volume of student referrals, including scheduling intakes, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to determine acceptance recommendations, communicating with district personnel and families regarding referral status, and facilitating the intake process from referral through placement.

  • Participate in building committees and BOCES-wide committees to help lead initiatives focused on safety, attendance, student engagement, instructional innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with instructional coaches and administrative colleagues to support teacher development, instructional effectiveness, and staff performance.

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of faculty meetings, staff professional learning, student activities, and school-wide events.

  • Oversee operational responsibilities, including purchase order review, service verification, and other administrative functions that support effective program delivery.

  • Perform supervisory, evaluative, and other duties as assigned by the Principal, such as evaluating teachers and teaching assistants following BOCES guidelines.

  • Assistant Principal will take on the operation of the school in the Principal's absence, when necessary.

  • Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university, or one accredited by New York State to grant degrees, with a master’s degree in educational leadership, or a related field.

  • New York State certification as a School Building Leader or School District Administrator required.

  • Programmatic experience in a special education setting.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school district administration, teachers, students, family members and community providers.

  • Strong team building and leadership skills.

  • Proven track record of using data-driven decision making to improve instruction, student outcomes and school operations.

  • Passion for promoting an equitable and engaging learning environment for all students.
