Full job description
Description We are looking for a Controller to oversee the financial health and accounting operations of a nonprofit organization in Fullerton, California. This position leads financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and budget planning across multiple operating units while supporting sound fiscal decision-making. The role works closely with executive leadership to deliver accurate consolidated reporting, guide audits and regulatory filings, and strengthen financial processes that support the organization’s mission.
Responsibilities:

Lead organization-wide accounting activities, including ledger management, payables, receivables, payroll, cash oversight, investments, and fixed asset administration.

Oversee financial reporting for multiple operating units and affiliated programs, ensuring complete and timely records across all areas under the organization’s fiscal responsibility.

Direct the monthly close cycle in partnership with accounting leadership, reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements for accuracy and completeness.

Prepare consolidated monthly financial reports, including intercompany balancing and elimination entries, for leadership review and decision support.

Manage audit readiness by organizing schedules, supporting documentation, and communication with external and campus auditors throughout the annual audit process.

Ensure all required tax submissions, compliance reports, and related regulatory filings are completed accurately and on schedule.

Lead the annual budgeting process by setting timelines, developing planning tools, and partnering with department leaders to evaluate budget submissions.

Deliver budget-to-actual analysis, forecast updates, and financial modeling that highlight trends, risks, and recommended actions for leadership and governing committees.

Maintain and refine business procedures and internal control practices to support compliance with organizational policies, campus-related requirements, and applicable laws.

Serve as a key financial partner to senior leadership by monitoring performance, investigating variances, and recommending strategies that strengthen fiscal stewardship. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.

Significant experience leading accounting and financial reporting functions, preferably within a nonprofit or similarly complex organization.

Strong knowledge of consolidated financial statement preparation, month-end close, and audit coordination.

Experience building and monitoring budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis for multiple departments or business units.

Solid understanding of internal controls, regulatory compliance, and financial policies.

Ability to communicate financial information clearly to executives, board members, and cross-functional stakeholders.

Proficiency in managing detailed financial documentation and maintaining accurate records across multiple entities.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
