Full job description

  • Experienced Histotech candidates are eligible to receive up to a $20,000 sign-on bonus upon hire!

  • New grads are eligible to receive $15,000!

  • Histotech candidates are also eligible to receive a $10,000 bonus upon completion of a third year of service.

*candidates may be hired at either the Histotechnologist or Histotechnician level depending on experience/education requirements met.

Purpose:

Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

  • Supports academic mission of department.

  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

  • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

Histotechnologist Requirements:

Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry. One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.

Histotechnician Requirements:

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/ university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR 3 years' experience working as a Histology Lab Technician or equivalent without certification.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire. New York License required for NY locations.

UPMC Central PA employees active in a histotechnician, on or before the effective date 1/1/2020, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.
