Full job description

We are seeking a Bi-lingual Mental Health Therapist who will provide assessment, evaluation, and treatment for children and families participating in Project BHEAM: Behavioral Health Equity Across Maryland. This is a grant-funded initiative aimed at expanding access to mental health services for Spanish-speaking individuals with limited English proficiency. The Mental Health Therapist will provide care for BHEAM clients at community sites and Johns Hopkins partner clinics, such as Esperanza Center.

The Mental Health Therapist will conduct assessments, diagnose mental health disorders, and provide counseling and therapy to support individuals in a group, study, or clinic.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct and document clinical mental health assessments.

  • Provide individual or group counseling to study participants. This may include structured psychotherapy such as brief motivational interviewing, as well as less structured or supportive psychotherapy.

  • Assist in the training, observation, and management of peer mentors who are lay health workers who deliver mental health services.

  • Participate in development of an initial plan of care to address the prioritized needs of the participants.

  • Prepare and keep track of clinical reports for primary care providers of assessed participants.

  • Prepare and present reports on activities of peer mentors in weekly research study team meetings.

  • Assist in developing operational procedures for management.

  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.

  • Assist in providing and/or coordinating the clinical activities of patients seen in outpatient clinics.

  • Perform other clinical duties and administrative duties.

  • Attend clinical meetings and staff business meetings.

  • Assist in developing/maintaining training and educational materials as needed.

  • Participate in peer/group or individual supervision with other clinical staff.

  • Perform a comprehensive psychological assessment on new clients referred to the mental health service.

  • Work collaboratively with, and provide leadership for, a multidisciplinary health care team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field required.

  • Two (2) years of related experience.

  • Maryland State independent licensure as a professional counselor, social worker, or psychologist.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Spanish language fluency is required (must pass qualified bilingual staff test administered by Johns Hopkins Language Access Services).
