Position Summary/Description:
This position specifically supports football student-athletes. As part of our commitment to attracting top talent, the selected candidate may be eligible to receive a sign on bonus up to the lessor of 20% of the position annual base salary or $2,000. Payment of and the amount of any sign-on bonus, if offered, is subject to university, Board of Trustee and Board of Governor policies, local market data and pay factors, and funding availability.
Academic Counselors provide academic support to student-athletes and assist with academic coaching in areas including study skills, time management, organizational skills, and strategies for developing balanced course schedules that align with practice, competition, and NCAA eligibility standards. Academic Counselors meet regularly with student-athletes to monitor academic progress and review feedback from faculty and tutors regarding class attendance, participation, and grades. They also reinforce guidance from official academic advisors and help educate student-athletes on institutional and NCAA eligibility requirements.
This position is responsible for coordinating the Campus Life Experience ( CLE ) student requirement on behalf of the department. This includes planning, tracking and monitoring student-athlete progress with their completion of CLE activities. This position will oversee the departmental process to track and monitor how many CLEs the departments 750 students have earned including identifying a way to collect data and a reporting mechanism, identify realistic goals and expectations for timely completion, and a communication plan to provide reminders for academic counselors, students, and coaches. These tasks will be especially demanding during critical times in the academic semester and will be integrated with her ongoing responsibilities for academic support. This position is the lead on the pregame event coordination for the department.
This position requires regular reporting to coaching staff, attendance at team meetings, preparation of semester academic/eligibility reports, and contributions to the Academic Progress Rate ( APR ) and Graduation Success Rate ( GSR ) tracking. Academic Counselors are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and ensure compliance with all NCAA , ACC , and University policies and procedures.
Education and Experience:
A Master’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience working with student-athletes in an academic support program, in an educational setting, or with undergraduates in a 4-year college or university setting.
Experience working with diverse student populations and at-risk students.
Essential Skills:
Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student retention and familiarity with issues related to student-athletes’ academic progress and transition issues.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Nightly and weekend work required, all year round.
