Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Finance & Controller, under the direction of F&A leadership, is responsible for providing strategic, analytical, and operational support across the institution, with approximately 40% of responsibilities dedicated to Academic Affairs and remaining time in support of college F&A needs including providing division support related to budgeting, compliance, and financial operations. This position serves as a key member of the Controller’s Leadership team in advancing the College’s financial stewardship, fiscal sustainability, budget planning, and operational effectiveness.
The Deputy Controller serves as the primary financial liaison to Academic Affairs, working closely with the Associate Provost for Academic Operations and Institutional Research ( AOIR ) to support budget development, financial planning, resource allocation, budget tracking and strategic decision-making. At the institutional level, the position partners with the Controller to strengthen financial operations, support compliance and internal controls, improve financial reporting, and advance long-range planning initiatives.
As a key member of the Finance leadership team, the Deputy Controller contributes to institutional financial strategies, serves as a trusted advisor to campus leaders, and provides leadership on initiatives that support the College’s strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability, as directed by the Controller.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field.

Significant progressively responsible experience in accounting, budgeting, financial management, auditing, or related areas. Military experience will be considered

Demonstrated experience supporting complex financial operations and budget planning
-
Strong knowledge of GAAP , financial reporting, budgeting practices, internal controls, and compliance requirements.

Experience analyzing financial data and presenting recommendations to senior leaders.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across organizational boundaries and build effective partnerships with diverse stakeholders.

Excellent analytical, organizational, project management, written, and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Public Accountant ( CPA )

Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

Experience in higher education, public sector, nonprofit, healthcare, or similarly regulated organizations.
-
Experience supporting academic budgeting, faculty resource planning, enrollment-driven budgeting, or institutional financial planning.
-
Familiarity with SUNY financial operations, policies, and reporting requirements.
-
Experience leading financial process improvement, change management, or system implementation initiatives.
-
Advanced proficiency with enterprise financial systems, reporting tools, business intelligence platforms, and financial forecasting methodologies.

Academic Affairs Financial Partner:
- Serves as the primary Finance & Administration partner for Academic Affairs
budget development, financial planning, and resource management.
- Provides financial consultation and recommendations to the Associate Provost
AOIR and Academic Affairs leadership
- Leads the preparation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of Academic Affairs
operating budgets, personnel budgets, one-time allocations, and multi-year
financial projections.
- Evaluates the financial implications of academic programs, staffing plans,
enrollment changes, and strategic initiatives.
- With the Controller, works closely with the Associate Provost for AOIR to align
financial planning, enrollment trends, workforce planning, and resource needs.
- Identifies financial opportunities and risks while promoting sound fiscal practices
and responsible stewardship of institutional resources.

Job Duty/ Responsibility
Strategic Financial Leadership and Controller Support:
- Serves as the Controller’s strategic partner in supporting the financial
management and fiscal health of the institution.
- Assists with the development and implementation of multi-fund budgets, financial
forecasts, and multi-year financial plans.
- Develops financial analyses, multi-year forecasting models, and scenario
planning tools to support executive decision-making.
- Collaborates with the Controller on institutional budget planning, financial
reporting, and resource allocation strategies.
- Supports divisional leaders in understanding financial information and using data
to inform decision-making, including assistance with financial needs of the
campus agencies including CAS and Geneseo Foundation related to audits,
compliance, and specials needs vs. account specific support.

Supports initiatives that advance operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and continuous process improvement

Represents the Controller on committees, projects, and institutional initiatives as
assigned.

Accounting Operations, Compliance, and Internal Controls:
- Assists the Controller in oversight of accounting operations, including general
accounting, accounts payable, receivables, cash management, travel, and
related business processes.
- Supports preparation of financial statements, management reports, audit
schedules, and required federal, state, SUNY , and institutional reporting.
- Helps ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
( GAAP ), SUNY policies, New York State regulations, and institutional
procedures.
- Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of internal controls
and financial policies.
- As assigned by the Controller serves as a liaison with SUNY Administration, the
Office of the State Comptroller, auditors, and other external partners

Resource Planning, Facilities, and Academic Space Utilization:
- Collaborates with Academic Affairs leadership, Facilities Services, and
Institutional Research on academic space utilization and facilities planning
initiatives.
- With Facilities Leaders assists in the development and tracking of financial
analyses and business cases related to capital projects, facilities improvements,
and strategic investments
- Supports resource planning efforts involving classroom, laboratory, office, and
instructional space allocation
- Contributes to long-range planning activities related to academic infrastructure
and resource needs.

Operational Excellence, Systems, and Special Projects:
- Partners with division leaders, SUNY peers and vendors to streamline financial
processes and improve effectiveness across business operations.

effectiveness initiatives.
- Participates in institutional committees, strategic work groups, and special
projects.
