Vice President, Support Services

Department: ADMINISTRATION - MVHS

Job Summary

As a forward-thinking executive leader, the VP of Support Services drives operational excellence and strategic growth across Mohawk Valley Health System's (MVHS) comprehensive hospital and ambulatory network. This executive proactively spearheads system-wide initiatives to anticipate regulatory shifts, mitigate organizational risks, and optimize long-term asset sustainability. By championing a culture of continuous improvement, they mobilize a massive non-clinical portfolio—including facilities management, emergency preparedness, predictive maintenance, biomedical engineering, corporate safety, security, and guest relations. Ultimately, this leader transforms support operations into a competitive advantage that elevates the patient and staff experience while aggressively advancing the organization’s mission and strategic goals.

Core Job Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Operations:

  • Drive operational excellence across all non-clinical support service departments to consistently deliver premier customer service, maximize cost efficiencies, and exceed healthcare regulatory compliance.

  • Orchestrate the master facilities plan, engineering forward-looking short- and long-term strategies for system growth, resource optimization, predictive maintenance, and next-generation technology integration.

  • Spearhead system-wide strategic initiatives that anticipate future healthcare demands, aggressively improving service delivery metrics, environmental sustainability, and overall patient satisfaction.

  • Forge strong cross-functional partnerships with executive and clinical leaders to seamlessly align support operations with clinical needs and accelerate institutional growth goals.

  • Cultivate high-performing leadership pipelines by actively mentoring department managers, embedding cultures of strict accountability, and securing robust succession plans for the future

Facilities, Maintenance, and Life Safety:

  • Ensure proper maintenance and operation of all buildings, infrastructure, and utilities across multiple campuses.

  • Lead planning and oversight for capital improvements, renovation projects, and facility expansions.

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory codes (e.g., DNV/TJC, NFPA, OSHA) and life safety standards.

  • Oversee preventative & corrective maintenance programs and systems to maximize facility operations.

Security, Emergency Management, and Safety:

  • Develop and maintain robust emergency preparedness and response programs for all facilities. Manage building-related emergencies, including utility failures and disaster response.

  • Oversee system-wide safety and risk reduction initiatives, including workplace safety and violence prevention.

  • Ensure security programs protect all people and property, in coordination with local authorities.

Environmental Services:

  • Ensure efficient delivery of environmental and dietary services that meet infection control standards and exceed patient satisfaction expectations.

  • Promote sustainable practices, waste reduction, and compliance with regulations.

Biomedical Engineering and Equipment Services:

  • Ensure medical equipment and technology assets are maintained, compliant, and optimized for safe patient care.

  • Oversee vendor contracts and partnerships related to bio-med services and capital equipment.

Real Estate and Property Management:

  • Oversee acquisition, leasing, and management of real estate assets for the system.

  • Participate in strategic planning for property development, space utilization, and site selection to support service growth.

Compliance, Financial Oversight, and Performance Monitoring:

  • Ensure operational compliance with all laws, codes, and regulations.

  • Manage departmental budgets and cost containment strategies.

  • Monitor key performance and quality indicators to drive continuous improvement. Collaborate with leaders and providers to formulate initiatives to achieve best practice in patient and employee satisfaction, safety, clinical outcomes, operational alignment, and financial value.

  • In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, make decisions related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolve staff issues in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with COO & HR.

  • Is flexible to respond to emergencies in a 24/7 environment.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • 15 years related experience in a healthcare institution and/or large campus environment to include 7 years of management experience.

  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations including DNV or TJC, OSHA, NFPA (Life Safety Code), CMS, DOH and local building codes.

  • Expertise in implementing and managing robust maintenance programs that reduce downtime and support patient safety.

  • Experience handling Emergency Response programs, situations and activities.

  • Experience in capital project management, including facility renovations and new construction projects in a clinical environment.

  • Experience leading skilled trades, engineers and custodial staff.

  • In depth understanding of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural) in a healthcare environment.

  • An understanding of how facility operations impact infection prevention and safety in healthcare settings.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills for fostering collaboration and collegiality with staff, executives, contractors and regulatory agencies.

  • Skill to provide guidance, advice and assistance in problem resolution to render win/win outcomes for safe patient outcomes and employee satisfaction.

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office tools, facilities management systems, building automation systems (BAS) and energy tracking tools.

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration
