School Nurse ( LPN 1:1)
This nursing position in a special education school setting involves providing health care services to students with diverse needs and disabilities. The nurse supports the health and safety of students by administering care, managing health plans, and collaborating with educational and medical staff. Work is performed under the general direction of the building administrators.
Typical Work Activities For Registered Nurses (RN):

Provide daily health care, including administering prescribed medications, treatments, and specialized medical procedures in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and medical orders.

Develop, implement, and monitor individualized health care plans for students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, seizures, diabetes, severe allergies).
-
Lead health-related components of IEP meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student learning and attendance.
-
Administer first aid and emergency treatment, including coordinating emergency services when necessary.

Conduct health screenings and notify families of concerns.
-
Serve as the primary point of contact for teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families regarding student health issues.

Maintain compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and NYSED regulations, including reporting and documentation requirements.
Typical Work Activities For Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN):

Provide daily health care, including medication administration, treatments, and basic medical procedures under the supervision and guidance of an RN.

Support the monitoring of students with chronic conditions and implement health care plans as directed by an RN.

Administer first aid and assist in emergencies, notifying the supervising RN and coordinating as appropriate.
-
Assist with health screenings and maintain accurate student health records.
-
Communicate observations and concerns to the supervising RN, teachers, administrators, and families.

Assist in maintaining medical supplies and equipment inventory.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics
-
Knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and techniques related to pediatric and adolescent populations, particularly students with disabilities.
-
Ability to respond effectively to health emergencies and follow established protocols.
-
Strong recordkeeping, confidentiality, and communication skills.
-
Compassion, patience, and understanding of the unique needs of students with disabilities.
-
For RNs: leadership in care planning, inter-agency coordination, and IEP participation.
-
For LPNs: ability to work effectively under the supervision of an RN and within a defined scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications

Registered Nurse (Preferred):Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the New York State Education Department and current license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).

Licensed Practical Nurse (Considered):Graduation from an approved practical nursing program and current license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Special Requirement

Possession of a current New York State license (RN or LPN, as applicable) at the time of appointment.

Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Rate: $25,469 Plus benefits and PTO per collective bargaining agreement.
