Job Description

We are seeking a Senior System Safety Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership in identifying, evaluating, and reducing electrical, mechanical, and environmental risks associated with complex engineered products and equipment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong electrical engineering background and experience applying structured safety methodologies to safety-critical products or systems.

This individual will partner closely with engineering and test teams to conduct safety reviews, evaluate designs, develop risk-reduction recommendations, support verification activities, and clearly communicate technical risks and recommendations to both engineering and leadership.

Key Responsibilities Establish and maintain structured system and product safety evaluation processes. Lead hazard analyses including FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and other system safety assessments. Identify potential electrical, mechanical, environmental, thermal, and stored-energy hazards. Review electrical, mechanical, and control-system designs from a system safety perspective. Develop practical, risk-based recommendations to improve product safety. Define safety requirements and support verification and validation planning. Review schematics, PCB layouts, cable and connector drawings, enclosures, BOMs, test results, and technical documentation. Partner with design and test teams to ensure safety recommendations are appropriately addressed and verified. Evaluate design assumptions, protective measures, test evidence, and remaining system risks. Identify gaps in safety-critical information and determine appropriate methods to close those gaps through analysis, testing, supplier input, or technical review. Clearly communicate technical risks, assumptions, mitigation options, verification gaps, and residual risk to technical and leadership audiences. Provide technical oversight of safety-related supplier and contractor work.

Skills and Requirements

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering, system/product safety, functional safety, compliance engineering, certification engineering, or safety-critical product development. Experience applying structured safety methods to complex electrical, electronic, electromechanical, or industrial systems. Hands-on experience with hazard analysis, risk reduction, safety requirements, verification, validation, and residual-risk assessment. Working knowledge of functional safety or safety-related control concepts, including standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, or comparable frameworks. Familiarity with hazardous-location, explosive-atmosphere, or ignition-risk concepts for electrical or electronic equipment. Strong understanding of DC power distribution, batteries, current limiting, fusing, protection circuits, stored energy, fault currents, and thermal effects. Ability to review and interpret electrical schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, wiring/cabling documentation, mechanical enclosures, and test data. Strong technical judgment and ability to make defensible engineering recommendations when information is incomplete. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

We are a company committed to creating diverse and inclusive environments where people can bring their full, authentic selves to work every day. We are an equal employment opportunity/affirmative action employer that believes everyone matters. Qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, national origin, ancestry, genetic factors, age, disability, protected veteran status, military or uniformed service member status, or any other status or characteristic protected by applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances.
