Summary

CHS has an exciting opportunity at our Oil Refinery facility in Laurel, Montana. We are looking for a Refinery Rotating Equipment Engineer Intern for the summer of 2027 to provide technical support assistance to refinery Mechanical Engineers for a variety of refinery units in order to achieve optimal performance while meeting company safety, environment, and economic guidelines. You must be detail oriented with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

The Rotating Equipment and Reliability Engineering Intern supports refinery reliability and maintenance engineers with equipment performance monitoring, failure analysis, inspection activities, maintenance planning, and improvement projects. Assignments are designed to develop practical engineering skills while providing exposure to rotating equipment, fixed equipment reliability programs, maintenance practices, and refinery operations in a safety-focused industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist reliability and maintenance engineers with monitoring equipment performance and reliability metrics.

  • Collect, organize, and analyze operating and maintenance data for pumps, compressors, turbines, motors, fans, and other refinery equipment.

  • Support reliability improvement initiatives focused on safety, equipment availability, maintenance cost reduction, and operational excellence.

  • Participate in field inspections of rotating equipment and assist with condition monitoring activities.

  • Assist with maintaining equipment records, inspection reports, maintenance documentation, and reliability databases.

  • Support root cause investigations and equipment failure analyses under the guidance of experienced engineers.

  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and project summaries.

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, inspection, reliability, and engineering personnel to support refinery activities.

  • Complete an assigned reliability or maintenance improvement project and present recommendations to refinery leadership at the conclusion of the internship.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Completion of sophomore year and pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.

Additional Qualifications

  • Available to work 40 hours per week.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Previous internship experience in the petrochemical or refining industry.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators.

  • Ability to work safely in an industrial refinery environment, including field assignments in operating process units.

  • Ability to climb stairs, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and safely access equipment for inspections.

CHS offers a competitive total rewards package. Compensation includes base wage and, depending upon position, may include other earnings such as bonus, incentives and commissions. Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications, minimum wage/salary requirements under local law.
