Full job description

The Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts is accepting applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in global media industries. The position begins Fall 2027.

Full-time faculty teach our core courses as well as topical seminars and small lecture classes. The core includes both undergraduate and graduate versions of three courses: Film Theory, Film History, and Television: History and Culture. Undergraduates must also take Introduction to Cinema Studies; MA students also take Film Form/Film Sense. We offer American Cinema: Origins to 1960 and International Cinema: Origins to 1960 in fall semesters and American Cinema: 1960 to Present and International Cinema: 1960 to Present in spring semesters. Beyond this core, faculty teach a variety of courses of their own design.

The department is part of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts and its new Institute for Critical Studies in the Arts, which is home to three departments: Cinema Studies, Performance Studies, and Art & Public Policy. The department’s ongoing initiatives include the Asian Film & Media Initiative and its Reel China Biennial, as well as the Orphan Film Symposium and the Audiovisual Preservation Exchange (APEX).

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $105,000 - $125,000. This represents base pay only (for 9 months) and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

We value applicants whose research on material and conceptual infrastructures of moving images intersects with any of the following: platform studies; production studies; environmental media studies; South-South collaboration, exchange, and competition ; cinema and media of South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East; labor and political economy. We value the study of both contemporary and historical media. Successful candidates will be willing and able to teach courses in our undergraduate and graduate core curricula.
