The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a dependable, safety-focused Juvenile Justice Specialist 5 (JJS 5) to provide leadership and oversight within a secure-care environment. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who excels in supervision, critical decision-making, and maintaining safe, orderly operations for youth and staff.

As a JJS-5, you’ll oversee security rounds, ensure facility entrances and exits remain secure, brief staff on daily activities, and maintain awareness of policy updates. You’ll respond to alarms and incidents, guide staff during high-pressure situations, and help ensure that actions taken protect life, property, and the overall safety of the facility. You’ll also support youth movement throughout the campus, conduct searches to prevent contraband, complete required documentation, and collaborate with facility leadership to maintain a secure and structured environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus:

Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR

Three years of experience in Probation and Parole.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Conducts security rounds to ensure gates, windows, and exits are secure and free of discrepancies.

  • Inspects staff equipment monthly to confirm operability and readiness.

  • Briefs staff on daily activities, youth movement, and any updates to policies or procedures.

  • Responds to alarms and incidents and supervises staff during disturbances to maintain safety and order.

  • Implements safety actions that protect life, property, and the environment during critical situations.

  • Maintains operational awareness of facility structure, functional roles, and major-incident protocols.

  • Supports youth movement throughout the facility, including meals, recreation, court trips, and special events.

  • Conducts searches of property, staff, youth, and living quarters to prevent and control contraband.

  • Completes required documentation related to searches, youth movement, and security activities.

  • Provides on-call coverage and performs additional duties as assigned, including acting in the absence of supervisory leadership

Compensation Information: The Juvenile Justice Specialist 5 title has a Special Entrance Rate of $1,971.20 biweekly.
