Full job description
Position Objective: The Laboratory Technician will provide overall support to the operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with NIA Core Lab (Clinical Core Unit) to store and distribute biological samples including blood, urine, DNA, RNA, tissue and saliva in the Sample Library for future scientific research. 1

Store new samples, update sample inventory, retrieve samples with proper authorization and maintain sample and database inventory; monitor overall sample inventory. 2

Maintain records of freezer assignment. 3

Coordinate and maintain below zero-degree temperature freezers and other sample storage and handling equipment; maintain accurate daily and monthly records as applicable.

Promptly report any issues encountered and their resolution to management.

Submit a monthly report to management on the last day of each month; notate the work completed daily, weekly and monthly.

Communicate with management and principal investigators on all Sample Library details regarding sample inquires and pull requests.

Monitor assigned repository projects including authorized sample pull requests, authorized sample destructions, sample consolidation, sample pull returns, sample information requests, sample inventory verification, and laboratory supply inventories Inform management of status updates regarding projects.

Compose and edit Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Sample Library at the discretion of management and in accordance with NIH standards and all applicable federal, state, local, and international regulations and guidelines. Addendum to Position

Description/Statement of Work For Emergency Management Responsibilities The following responsibilities may be assigned to a contractemployee of this position.

Verification of whether or not a contract employee will be assigned these duties is to be obtained from the first-level of management of the position.

In an emergency situation, contract employee is available to the best of his/her abilities to perform his/her assigned duties in order to ensure the continuity of NIA’s critical core functions as appropriate.

Emergencies can range from inclement weather or a building fire/flood to a natural disaster or terrorist attack. Because emergencies can happen at any time, the contract employee will provide all updated personal contact information (cell and home telephone numbers, home email address, personal blackberry pin number if applicable,etc.) to Contracting Agency to ensure rapid response in the event of an emergency outside of regular business hours.

As an emergency staff member, the contract employee will perform his/her assigned duties as requested to help protect NIA’s critical resources (e.g., staff, patients, animals, research, property), and help to ensure the continuation of NIA Critical

The core functions include: (1) maintenance of employee safety; (2) care for clinical patients, including monitoring and oversight of Advanced Studies in Translational Research on Aging (ASTRA) study participants; (3) care and feeding of animals; (4) maintenance of physical security; (5) maintenance of mission critical laboratory and clinical experiments and scientific equipment; (6) safeguarding perishable laboratory samples and biological stock; (7) preservation and protection of NIA information systems and data; (9) communication with NIA researchers and grantees; NIH, and various Institutes and Centers; other government agencies; private sector partnering organizations; and key stakeholders; and (10) serving as a member of the NIA Crisis Response Team (CRT). The core functions the contract employee will be expected to support are those that relate to his/her assigned duties as outlined in the position description Clean Equipment, Run Validation, Inspect Equipment, and Meet with lab members to present updates
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related discipline.

Minimum of three years of experience working in a laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff

Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
