Full job description

Position Summary

The Messenger operates institutional cars, trucks, or vans to ensure the secure, timely, and efficient transport of internal mail, educational materials, sensitive records, and equipment between campus locations, district schools, administrative offices, and post offices. This role requires careful route planning, strict compliance with student privacy laws, and safe driving protocols.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle & Delivery Operations: Safely operate a school owned car or van to transport interoffice mail, curriculum materials, test booklets, and supply orders. Meet fixed daily route schedules linking various campus facilities.

  • Logistics & Inventory Tracking: Print picklists for outgoing deliveries. Collect and confirm all equipment and deliver to assigned locations. Obtain formal signoffs for all deliveries, and upon return, enter correct quantities delivered and pertinent notes into our proprietary project management software. Use handheld scanners to inventory all returned equipment and report any untagged or unrecognized equipment to the Stock Clerk.

  • Customer Service & Safety: Provide professional, polite service during pickups and drop-offs. Operate delivery vehicles in strict compliance with local traffic laws and safety guidelines. Conduct daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections (fluids, tires, lights). Report maintenance needs promptly to the fleet manager. Cleaning interior and exterior of truck on regular basis.

  • Warehouse Support: Sort incoming mail, organize inventory, and assist with general facility tasks (such as sweeping, cleaning) when not driving a route.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Licensing: Valid state driver’s license with an excellent, clean driving record. Must pass a DMV background check.

  • Clearances: Must successfully pass mandatory educational background checks, including fingerprinting and criminal history reviews.

  • Technical Skills: Competency using phone-based GPS navigation systems (to plot delivery routes), computer skills (for accessing email-based assignments, maintaining delivery records, etc.), handheld digital barcode scanners.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting & Carrying: Frequently lift and carry boxes or mail bins weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional lifting of lightweight parcels (up to 20 pounds) above shoulder level to retrieve items from high vehicle shelves or storage racks.

  • Pushing & Pulling: Regularly push loaded rolling carts and hand trucks weighing up to 150 pounds. Use pallet jacks to load and unload trucks with heavy pallets (up to 5000 lbs.).

  • Vehicle Mobility: Step in and out of a van or car 30 to 50 times daily.

  • Prolonged Sitting: Sit and drive safely for 1 to 2 hours at a time between stops.

  • Campus Walking: Walks daily across large campus layouts and parking lots.

  • Body Movements: Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, and climbing stairs and ladders while carrying packages.

  • Weather Resilience: Work outdoors in extreme heat, freezing cold, rain, snow, and icy conditions.

  • Motor & Sensory Skills: Use fine motor skills for digital scanners and maintain sharp driving vision.
