What You'll Be Doing

Job Scope: Generally responsible for performing routine designs of less complex engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This work will be performed under direct supervision.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Lead development and technical review of complex equipment layouts, piping plans, sections, isometrics, fabrication details, tie-in packages, and general mechanical drawings.

  • Translate process and project requirements into coordinated mechanical design packages using P&IDs, line lists, piping specifications, equipment data, vendor drawings, laser scans, and field verification.

  • Establish design approaches for difficult brownfield installations, including routing, access, maintainability, constructability, lifting, outage, and sequencing constraints.

  • Perform checking and quality reviews of drawings, models, BOMs, MTOs, and vendor information produced by internal and external designers.

  • Lead field walkdowns and design verification; resolve discrepancies and ensure redlines and final as-builts are accurately incorporated into plant records.

  • Apply and interpret plant standards and applicable mechanical and piping codes and specifications, escalating engineering judgments to the responsible engineer when required.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design interfaces and facilitate model, constructability, and design reviews with engineering, operations, maintenance, safety, construction, and vendors.

  • Develop or improve drafting practices, standard details, design workflows, drawing templates, and quality-control checklists.

  • Provide design input to estimates, schedules, execution plans, procurement packages, vendor reviews, bid evaluations, and construction work packages.

  • Resolve complex field design questions and support construction, commissioning, turnover, and project closeout while maintaining appropriate engineering approvals.

  • Identify and communicate design risks, scope gaps, cost impacts, and schedule constraints to project leadership.

  • Set a good example with all rules and regulations to achieve 100% universal compliance with HS&E procedures and regulations.

  • Participate in or lead design reviews, constructability reviews, safety audits, surveillances, pre-startup activities, and lessons-learned reviews.

Ideal Background

Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.

Registration: Engineer in training (EIT) registration is strongly preferred.

Experience: This position requires 7+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma; Associate degree in mechanical design, drafting, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible industrial mechanical or piping design experience, including significant brownfield chemical or process-plant work.

  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and demonstrated capability with applicable 3D plant-design tools.

  • Advanced understanding of P&IDs, PFDs, equipment arrangements, piping plans, isometrics, fabrication details, piping specifications, and vendor documentation.

  • Strong working knowledge of piping components, valves, supports, equipment interfaces, materials of construction, and design considerations for operability and maintainability.

  • Strong working knowledge of ASME B31.3 process piping concepts and the ability to apply plant and project design standards consistently.

  • Demonstrated experience checking design deliverables, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, and resolving complex field conditions.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
