Full job description

We are seeking an experienced Payload Flight Software Lead to lead the architecture, development, integration, testing, and verification of mission-critical flight software for embedded and real-time systems. This role will provide technical leadership to a team of software engineers while partnering closely with systems engineering, hardware, and integration & test teams to deliver high-quality software solutions supporting advanced aerospace and space technologies.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in embedded software development, real-time operating systems, software architecture, and technical leadership. This individual will play a key role in defining system architectures, driving software development efforts, and ensuring successful program execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of software engineers in the development and delivery of flight software solutions.

  • Define software architectures for embedded and real-time systems.

  • Oversee software design, development, integration, testing, verification, and deployment activities.

  • Produce and maintain architecture documentation, interface control documents, traceability matrices, trade studies, and technical specifications.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams including Systems Engineering, Hardware Engineering, and Integration & Test.

  • Analyze system requirements and translate them into robust software designs.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software, integration, and system-level issues.

  • Evaluate system performance and recommend improvements related to functionality, efficiency, and reliability.

  • Support program planning, technical reviews, and software lifecycle management activities.

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure successful project execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with 12+ years of relevant experience, OR

  • Master's degree in a STEM discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience, OR

  • PhD in a STEM discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • Active SCI security clearance.

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams.

  • Expert-level proficiency in Embedded C/C++ development.

  • Extensive experience with real-time operating systems, including VxWorks.

  • Strong understanding of full software development lifecycle processes from requirements through testing and deployment.

  • Experience developing and maintaining technical software documentation.

  • Knowledge of communication buses and protocols such as MIL-STD-1553 and SpaceWire.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Cost Account Management (CAM).

  • Experience supporting or leading proposal efforts.

  • Ability to develop system requirements and evaluate design tradeoffs involving performance, memory utilization, and cost.

  • Experience working within Agile development environments.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD methodologies and tools such as Jenkins.

  • Aerospace, defense, satellite, or space systems experience.

  • Experience with complex integrated software and hardware environments.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Redondo Beach, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $75.00 - $79.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
