Job Title: Safety Specialist / EHS Professional

Job Description

This role leads the development, implementation, and ongoing management of a comprehensive safety and environmental health program in an industrial manufacturing environment. You will champion a culture of safety, ensure compliance with OSHA and related regulations, and work closely with teams across the facility to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and maintain accurate safety documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies, procedures, and programs that support a safe working environment.

  • Monitor compliance with applicable OSHA requirements and workplace safety regulations across the facility.

  • Conduct regular facility and manufacturing-floor safety inspections to identify hazards and unsafe work practices.

  • Identify and document hazards and unsafe conditions, and ensure corrective actions are developed, implemented, and tracked through completion.

  • Maintain all required safety and compliance documentation, including OSHA records and regulatory reports.

  • Coordinate and support OSHA inspections, insurance audits, customer audits, and other safety-related reviews.

  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Hazard Communication documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor required safety postings, procedures, and employee communications to ensure they remain current and visible.

  • Manage and oversee the industrial safety program, ensuring it aligns with regulatory requirements and best practices.

  • Develop and conduct employee safety training programs tailored to various roles and departments.

  • Perform workplace safety inspections and hazard assessments and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.

  • Investigate workplace injuries, accidents, and near misses, identify root causes, and recommend preventive measures.

  • Support environmental compliance efforts, including monitoring and reporting on applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with HR, production management, supervisors, employees, vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies to address safety and compliance needs.

  • Spend significant time on the manufacturing floor to observe operations, reinforce safe work practices, and build strong relationships with employees.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive safety or EHS experience, preferably in manufacturing, sheet metal fabrication, metalworking, machining, welding, or another industrial environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA requirements and workplace safety regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience managing an industrial safety program.

  • Proven experience developing and conducting employee safety training.

  • Experience with OSHA recordkeeping and compliance reporting.

  • Experience conducting workplace safety inspections and hazard assessments.

  • Experience investigating workplace injuries, accidents, and near misses.

  • Experience with environmental compliance and regulatory reporting.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet regulatory deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear documentation, reporting, and training delivery.

  • Ability to work independently while partnering effectively with HR, production management, supervisors, employees, vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.

  • Ability and willingness to spend significant time on the manufacturing floor in an industrial environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in safety management within construction or industrial settings.

  • Hands-on experience in safety, safety management, and EHS programs.

  • Knowledge of construction safety practices and health and safety principles.

  • Familiarity with OSHA safety procedures and safety audits.

  • Experience conducting safety training sessions for diverse employee groups.

  • Exposure to audit and compliance activities related to safety and environmental regulations.

  • Preferred exposure to OSHA-focused training such as OSHA 30 or OSHA 500 or similar advanced safety coursework.

Work Environment

The position involves regular interaction with HR, production management, supervisors, employees, vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies. Work hours typically follow standard business and production schedules, with some flexibility needed for audits, inspections, or incident investigations. Appropriate safety attire and personal protective equipment are required on the manufacturing floor in alignment with facility safety policies.

This is a Permanent position based out of Des Plaines, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $75000.00 - $90000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
