Full job description

Jacobs is seeking full-time, modified full-time, or part-time staff archaeologists to work on a variety of projects throughout the western United States. Your primary focus will be providing archaeological support and both desktop and field-based cultural resources support for planning, engineering, and construction services to government, military, and commercial clients in various locations. The Senior Archaeologist career path provides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations.

The archaeologist career path provides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act (NAGPRA), and other federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations. All work will be conducted under the guidance of senior cultural resources staff.

The ideal candidate will have a B.A. in anthropology/archaeology/CRM with experience working in at least one western state and experience in conducting archaeological surveys and construction monitoring. Familiarity with basic artifact and feature identification, mapping, data recording, site documentation, and photography is a requirement. Other qualifications include excellent writing and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and technological proficiency that includes some experience working with GIS and relational databases.

While this position will primarily support projects within or near the state where you live travel is expected for the position. Primary duties will include conducting Class I research, Class III surveys, and cultural resources monitoring. This will involve conducting pre-field research, participating in fieldwork and laboratory analysis, and preparing technical reports. It is imperative that candidates be able to work 8-to-10-hour days in a variety of conditions.

Possible office locations: HYBRID, REMOTE, or OFFICE. May be located near any state in the US West, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming.

Our Archaeologists:

  • Coordinate compliance with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, state environmental regulations, and other laws relating to cultural resources

  • Conduct archival research and background records reviews

  • Conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (primarily survey and monitoring)

  • Conduct analyses and prepare technical reports for projects that involve cultural resources

  • Evaluate eligibility of resources for listing in the NRHP and state registers of historic properties

  • Provide support to and work with senior-level cultural resources staff

  • B.A./B.S. Degree or higher in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology

  • Completion of an archaeological field school

  • Minimum of two years of professional archaeological field work experience with extensive experience completing construction monitoring

  • Knowledge of computers and GPS equipment (FieldMaps and Survey 123)

  • Ability and willingness to travel to distant or remote areas, and for extended periods as required

  • Ability to walk for long periods of time over unfamiliar terrain, excavate shovel tests and test units, screen soil, and carry field equipment

  • Ability to work 8 to 10-hour days (or longer if necessary) in a variety of conditions

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Organizational and time management skills to effectively complete assigned workload within defined timelines and in accordance with established standards

  • Must be motivated and able to work safely with minimum supervision

Ideally, you'll also have:

  • Experience conducting research, literature reviews, and cartographic reviews

  • Experience writing compliance reports and completing site forms

  • Background in the consulting environment

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be responsive to both internal and external clients

  • HAZWOPER certification
