Summary About the Position: This is a Industrial Hygienist, GS-0690-13 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, Safety & Occupational Health Office. Responsibilities Advise on the planning, development, implementation, and management of industrial hygiene and occupational health activities. Establish program priorities, technical standards, policies, and procedures for safety and occupational health programs. Provide technical leadership and expertise in the assessment, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards and the execution of USACE industrial hygiene programs. Develop and recommend appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls to mitigate occupational health risks. Evaluate program implementation and provide guidance to District personnel to ensure consistent and effective execution. Conduct workplace evaluations to identify, assess, and document occupational health hazards and determine compliance with applicable industrial hygiene requirements. Plan, schedule, and conduct SASOHI inspections and baseline, periodic, and activity-based occupational health and industrial hygiene surveys. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coordinating Industrial Hygiene programs and resources across an organization; mentoring and providing technical support to other Industrial Hygienists; and using occupational health systems to collect, manage, and evaluate workplace health information to support occupational health programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
