Job Opportunity : Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist

Location : Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, JBSA-Lackland, San Antonio, TX

Start Date : Immediate

Schedule : Full-Time – Monday–Friday, 9-hour shift (0730–1630) with a 1-hour unpaid lunch, not to exceed 40 hours/week

Are you a skilled Ophthalmology Technician or Technologist looking to make a meaningful impact in military health care? Do you want to provide expert clinical and surgical support to service members, military families, and retirees? If so, this opportunity might be a perfect fit.

We are seeking three (3) full-time Ophthalmology Technicians/Technologists to support the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Working under a personal services arrangement, you'll provide direct clinical, surgical, and administrative support to the optometry/ophthalmology team, helping ensure our nation's military community receives outstanding eye care.

What You'll Do

Patient & Clinical Support

  • Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to your level of certification (COA, COT, or COMT).

  • Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.

Surgical Assistance

  • Prepare patients and perform as a surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery and/or minor surgical procedures as required.

Medications, Supplies & Equipment

  • Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies, and equipment for use by the physician; perform routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.

  • Maintain and perform required periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment; perform user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment; perform and document calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment per equipment specifications.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist with administrative/clinical duties when not actively working in patient care, including maintaining cleanliness per infection control guidance (MDWI 44-157) and performing inventory weekly or as needed.

  • You're detail-oriented and comfortable performing both clinical and administrative duties in a fast-paced medical setting.

  • You take pride in supporting surgical procedures with precision and care.

  • You're organized and proactive about equipment maintenance, supply management, and infection control.

  • You're mission-minded and want to support the military community in a meaningful way.

  • You're comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with optometrists, ophthalmologists, and clinical staff.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma

  • Five years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after COA, COT, or COMT certification from JCAHPO

Certifications

  • Current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Work Authorization

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Health & Screening Requirements

  • Must complete required immunizations and screenings prior to placement, including TB screening, influenza, Tdap, HIV testing (as applicable), MMR, varicella, and Hepatitis B, per DoD/MTF policy

Schedule & Location

  • Full-time position (up to 40 hours/week), Monday–Friday, within MTF operating hours of 0600–1800

  • On-site at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, JBSA-Lackland — telework is not permitted
