Quality Engineer

Job Description

The Quality Engineer ensures the quality and reliability of wire harness components, manufacturing processes, and finished harness assemblies in a fast-paced production environment. This role partners closely with engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and service teams to develop, implement, and optimize production processes that consistently deliver high-quality products and exceed customer expectations. The position focuses on applying advanced quality methodologies, statistical analysis, and data visualization techniques to prevent defects, improve operational performance, and ensure products meet stringent quality and reliability requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive Quality Management System (QMS) for wire harness manufacturing to ensure compliance with customer requirements, engineering specifications, and applicable industry standards.

  • Lead investigations into quality-related issues across harness production processes, including cut and strip, crimping, splicing, connector termination, taping, braiding, continuity testing, and hipot testing.

  • Drive effective corrective actions based on investigation results and communicate quality performance, findings, and recommendations to key stakeholders.

  • Perform routine in-process inspections, final inspections, and process audits to verify product conformance and adherence to defined quality criteria.

  • Evaluate critical parameters such as crimp height, crimp width, pull-force testing results, electrical test coverage, and workmanship standards in accordance with IPC/WHMA-A-620 requirements.

  • Analyze quality data and develop performance metrics to identify trends, monitor nonconformances, and prioritize continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Prepare and present clear quality reports that communicate key performance indicators (KPIs), nonconformance trends, corrective actions, and progress toward quality objectives.

  • Maintain and oversee quality documentation, including inspection records, control plans, PFMEAs, work instructions, quality procedures, and corrective and preventive action documentation.

  • Provide guidance, training, and technical support to manufacturing, operations, engineering, and quality personnel regarding quality standards, inspection methods, and best practices.

  • Lead containment activities, material reviews, and quality sorting initiatives to protect customers from nonconforming product and stabilize processes.

  • Conduct root cause investigations and facilitate structured problem-solving methodologies such as RCCA and 8D to eliminate recurring defects including miswires, opens, shorts, crimp failures, and connector damage.

  • Support new product introductions by participating in equipment qualifications, process validations, First Article Inspections (FAI), and process capability studies to ensure robust and repeatable manufacturing processes.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to champion continuous improvement, promote data-driven decision-making, and reinforce a culture of quality excellence throughout the organization.

Essential Skills

  • Quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, with a strong focus on wire harnesses and related processes.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in QA/QC within a manufacturing setting.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Quality Engineer.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering.

  • Proficiency in quality methodologies including Six Sigma, Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DoE), and Statistical Process Control (SPC).

  • Strong skills in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving, including RCCA and 8D approaches.

  • Hands-on experience with quality control, quality assurance, and quality management systems.

  • Ability to develop, implement, and maintain Quality Management Systems (QMS) and related documentation such as control plans, PFMEAs, work instructions, and procedures.

  • Experience with corrective action plans and preventive actions to address and eliminate nonconformances.

  • Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 requirements and related workmanship standards for wire harness assemblies.

  • Capability to analyze quality data, create performance metrics, and use data visualization to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.

  • Strong communication skills to prepare and present quality reports, KPIs, and improvement plans to stakeholders.

  • Ability to provide training and technical guidance to cross-functional teams on quality standards and inspection methods.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Certification or formal training in Six Sigma methodologies.

  • Affiliation with or certification from ASQ (American Society for Quality).

  • Experience working with advanced statistical analysis tools and data visualization techniques to support decision-making.

  • Familiarity with APQP processes for new product introduction and launch.

  • Knowledge of IPC 620 standards and related industry requirements for wire harness manufacturing.

  • Experience supporting equipment qualifications, process validations, First Article Inspections (FAI), and process capability studies.

  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively, identify potential quality risks, and implement robust preventive measures.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and service teams.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
