Job Title: Senior Staff AccountantJob Description

The Senior Staff Accountant manages accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting activities, and tax-related compliance for a portfolio of real estate entities. This role prepares and analyzes financial data, maintains accurate accounting records, supports annual planning processes, and ensures timely, reliable financial reporting for internal leadership and property ownership groups. The position offers the opportunity to take ownership of partnership and LLC tax filings, contribute to process improvements, and play a key role in both day-to-day accounting and year-end close activities.

Responsibilities

  • Examine daily cash receipt activity to confirm funds are accurately deposited, properly classified, and recorded within the appropriate entities and general ledger accounts.

  • Review bank account reconciliations on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely resolution of reconciling items.

  • Prepare and evaluate quarterly journal entries, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded correctly and reflected in the general ledger.

  • Generate and analyze quarterly financial reports for assigned entities, verifying the accuracy of reported information and providing clear explanations for significant budget-to-actual variances.

  • Coordinate the annual budgeting process by gathering operational and project-related information from property management and construction teams and developing budget forecasts using established budgeting guidelines.

  • Lead year-end accounting activities, including reviewing account balances and completing general ledger closing procedures.

  • Prepare annual federal and state partnership and LLC tax filings for designated entities, including forms such as 1065 and 565, and related schedules such as K-1s, when applicable.

  • Manage a meaningful volume of partnership tax returns, contributing to a team goal of approximately 6770 returns per year and handling around 20 returns personally.

  • Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of accounting and tax workflows.

  • Support additional accounting-related responsibilities as assigned, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to meet reporting and compliance deadlines.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.

  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial reporting practices.

  • Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, journal entries, and budgets.

  • Demonstrated experience with partnership and LLC taxation, including preparation of partnership tax returns and related schedules.

  • Proficiency with accounting software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems; experience with Sage 300 is valued, though other ERPs are also considered.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including functions such as VLOOKUP and the ability to work with complex spreadsheets.

  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, with the ability to sign off on tax returns.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • At least 5+ years of relevant accounting and tax experience, ideally in environments handling a substantial volume of partnership tax returns.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a public accounting firm, particularly with partnership tax and income tax preparation.

  • Background in audit is highly preferred, complementing strong tax experience.

  • Hands-on experience preparing partnership tax returns, including forms 1065, 565, and related K-1 schedules, at a volume of approximately 20 returns per year or more.

  • Familiarity with tax software, with ProSystem fx Tax preferred, though experience with other tax platforms is also welcomed.

  • CPA designation (Certified Public Accountant), with active status strongly preferred due to responsibility for signing tax returns.

  • Comfort working across various industries, with the ability to adapt accounting and tax practices to different business models.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively as a team player in a family-oriented, supportive culture.

  • Track record of handling a meaningful volume of tax filings rather than limited exposure to only a few returns per year.

Work Environment

The work environment is professional, collaborative, and family-oriented, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and mutual support. Employees enjoy a culture that values appreciation and celebration, with numerous events throughout the year recognizing holidays and milestones. The accounting team operates in a structured setting that leverages enterprise ERP systems such as Sage 300 and tax software like ProSystem fx Tax, alongside extensive use of Microsoft Excel for reporting and analysis. Performance is measured in part by contribution to team goals, including the preparation of approximately 6770 partnership tax returns annually, with each Senior Staff Accountant typically responsible for around 20 returns. The environment encourages accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement while maintaining a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
