Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Security Captain, the Staff Sergeant assists with the coordination, oversight, and continuous improvement of security operations at the assigned job site.

Responsibilities include workforce training and development, regulatory and contract compliance monitoring, quality assurance audits, incident review, administrative support, and ensuring security services are delivered in accordance with client requirements, company policies, post orders, and applicable laws and regulations.

The Staff Sergeant is a working supervisor who may perform security duties while providing guidance, coaching, and operational support to subordinate personnel.

The position requires strong leadership, attention to detail, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build effective partnerships with clients, management, and employees.

The responsibilities listed below are representative of the position and may vary based on client requirements, contract scope, operational needs, and job site location.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 2-3 years of prior experience in law enforcement, military police, corrections, or private security

  • Minimum 1 year of prior supervisory experience.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • State Unarmed Security Officer License or ability to obtain. Licensing requirements are subject to state and/or local laws and regulations and may be required prior to employment.

  • May be required to have or obtain a TWIC card depending on job site.

  • Ability to lead with professionalism, integrity, and respect.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong decision making and incident/event management skills

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications

  • As a condition of employment, must be able to successfully complete a criminal background investigation, drug screen, and a post-offer physical.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree

  • Prior experience in industrial, critical infrastructure, energy, or remote-site security operations.

  • Experience conducting training, inspections, audits, or compliance reviews.

  • Experience developing post orders, standard operating procedures (SOPs), or training materials.

  • CPR, First Aid, AED, or incident command certifications.

  • Knowledge of security management systems, access control systems, CCTV systems, and incident reporting platforms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform all job duties in accordance with company and client policies, post orders, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Leadership and Workforce Development

  • Serve as a resource and mentor to Security Officers and Security Sergeants.

  • Support supervisory staff in maintaining operational consistency and adherence to performance expectations.

  • Provide coaching, instruction, and guidance regarding security procedures, emergency response protocols, and customer service standards.

  • Assist with interviewing and selection, site onboarding, and integration of newly hired personnel.

  • Identify training needs and recommend developmental opportunities for assigned personnel.

  • Reinforce professional conduct, appearance, attendance, and performance standards.

  • All supervisory responsibilities must be carried out in accordance with DUS policies and applicable laws and within approved empowerment range.

Training and Quality Assurance

  • Coordinate and/or conduct training programs for security personnel.

  • Verify completion of required client, regulatory, and company training requirements.

  • Conduct job observations, inspections, and quality assurance reviews.

  • Evaluate operational effectiveness and recommend improvements.

  • Assist with maintaining training records and other compliance documentation.

  • Support readiness initiatives, drills, and emergency response training.

Security Operations

  • Assist with the coordination of daily security operations.

  • Monitor compliance with contract requirements, post orders, and standard operating procedures.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing coverage and operational readiness.

  • Perform security duties as needed, including badging, patrols, inspections, access control, and emergency notifications.

  • Respond to incidents, emergencies, alarms, and security breaches calmly and efficiently in accordance with established procedures.

Compliance and Administrative Functions

  • Conduct audits/inspections of reports, logs, equipment, vehicles, licenses, and operational practices.

  • Review incident reports for accuracy, completeness, and quality.

  • Review and submit timesheets or payroll reports as required

  • Assist with investigations involving accidents, incidents, policy violations, or customer concerns.

  • Maintain confidentiality of personnel, operational, and client information.

Customer and Client Relations

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, visitors, customers, contractors, and employees.

  • Work with the Captain to address concerns and operational issues in a professional and timely manner.

  • Represent the company in a professional manner at all times.

Other

  • Safely operate a motor vehicle in a variety of settings and varying weather conditions.

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and teamwork.

  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and dependable attendance.

  • May be required to respond to urgent matters on weekends and evenings.

  • May cover or serve as a back-up for the Security Captain position

  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner.

  • Willingness to perform other duties as required

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The employee will be required to work at the client’s job site and may occasionally be assigned to confined workspaces such as a security guard post, security gate, or patrol vehicles. The majority of work is performed in an industrial/critical infrastructure setting with a variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee’s work requires routine sitting, walking, standing, bending, and occasionally carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to visually monitor multiple screens simultaneously. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Candidate/incumbent will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and/or fitness for duty test.
