Position Summary:

The Beck College of Sciences and Mathematics invites candidates for a 12-month appointment as Director of Pre-Professional Programs. The Director will report to the dean but is expected to work closely with the chairs of the departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry & Physics, and across colleges as needed. The Director will serve as a university-wide resource, providing expert guidance and mentorship to students interested in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant programs, public health, and other allied health fields.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one mentoring to students at all stages of their pre-professional journey. Hold regularly-scheduled meetings with all pre-professional students to review timelines, requirements, and opportunities.

  • Guide students through application processes, entrance exam preparation (MCAT, DAT, GRE, etc.), and interview readiness, during their junior and senior years.

  • Support retention by mentoring students who wish to pivot toward alternate career paths.

  • Identify students entering the application cycle and provide comprehensive instructions and materials.

  • Communicate with faculty regarding recommendation letters and Pre-Professional Committee processes and deadlines.

  • Organize and manage pre-professional interview sessions (fall and spring semesters), coordinating faculty interviewers, schedules, and student documentation.

  • Compile, evaluate, and submit complete application packets—including committee letters, interview evaluations, and recommendations—to AMCAS, AADSAS, VMCAS, CASPA, and related systems.

  • Track and maintain detailed student records, outcomes, and historical acceptance data.

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for the NYIT Freshman to Physician Pathway Program, ensuring a seamless transition between A-State undergraduate coursework and NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. Collaborate with NYIT administrators and advisors to align curricula, academic standards, and advising milestones for the NYIT Pathway program.

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for the 3 Plus 4 Pathway Program, ensuring a seamless undergraduate transition to A-State College of Veterinary Medicine. Collaborate with CVM administrators and advisors to align curricula for early entry to CVM DVM Program.

  • Collect and tabulate interview scores, GPA data, MCAT/DAT results, and faculty evaluations.

  • Prepare annual reports on applicant outcomes for program and institutional assessment.

  • Foster and maintain relationships with regional and national professional schools, admissions representatives, and healthcare organizations.

  • Teaching: Instruct Pre-Professional First-Year Experience classes and arrange health professionals to assist in teaching BIO 3201 Introduction to Medical and Dental Practices and BIO 3241 Physical Diagnosis.

  • Collaborate with NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, UAMS Northeast Arkansas, and other partners to develop shadowing, mock interviews, and outreach programs.

  • Participate in professional development, including the annual UAMS Pre-Medical Advisors Meeting (April, virtual).

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned MS degree in a discipline represented within Beck College of Sciences & Mathematics

Experience in academic mentoring, student development, and professional school preparation, with a demonstrated record of active mentorship and success in guiding students toward admission to graduate or professional programs.
