AFO is looking for a Site, Safety & Health Officer Lead to work in Honolulu, HI. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!
The SSHO Lead provides senior safety and health leadership for Construction Management Services (CMS) supporting U.S. Government construction and facilities projects across Kauaʻi, including PMRF, Barking Sands, Makaha Ridge, and other assigned locations. The position ensures compliance with OSHA, DoD, USACE/NAVFAC, contract, and installation-specific safety requirements while providing field leadership across multiple concurrent projects.
Responsibilities

Serve as the senior CMS safety authority for Kauaʻi construction activities.

Establish and oversee implementation of project safety and health requirements, including APPs, AHAs, EM 385 requirements, and site-specific safety plans.

Conduct field inspections and audits and verify contractor/subcontractor compliance.

Identify, assess, and mitigate construction hazards and maintain visibility of significant project safety risks.

Review safety plans, AHAs, high-risk work plans, and contractor safety submittals.

Lead incident, near-miss, and mishap response, investigation, and corrective-action tracking.

Coordinate safety requirements with the Government, installation personnel, Construction Managers, QC staff, contractors, and subcontractors.

Provide safety leadership for high-risk activities including excavation, lifting, electrical, confined space, fall protection, heavy equipment, utilities, and emergency/recovery work.

Lead and mentor project SSHOs and safety personnel supporting the Kauaʻi portfolio.

Support emergency preparedness and rapid mobilization for mission-critical or recovery requirements.

Provide senior leadership with timely safety metrics, trends, deficiencies, and emerging risks.
Qualifications
-
10+ years construction safety experience, including significant Federal/DoD construction experience.
-
Demonstrated experience as an SSHO, Safety Manager, or equivalent senior construction safety position.

Strong knowledge of OSHA construction requirements and USACE/NAVFAC/EM 385 safety requirements.

Experience overseeing prime contractors and subcontractors in active construction environments.

Strong field leadership, communication, documentation, and incident-investigation skills.

Ability to work across multiple geographically dispersed project sites.

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.

OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required.
-
CSP, CHST, or equivalent nationally recognized safety credential preferred.
-
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
-
Must meet all applicable USACE/NAVFAC and EM 385-1-1 SSHO qualification requirements.
