Full job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluations & Assessments

  1. Conduct comprehensive physical therapy evaluations to assess gross motor development, mobility, balance, coordination, posture, strength, and functional performance.

  2. Utilize clinical observations, standardized assessments, and educational data to determine student needs.

  3. Complete reevaluations and progress monitoring according to district, state, and federal requirements.

IEP Development & Implementation

  1. Participate as a related service provider during IEP meetings.

  2. Develop measurable motor and mobility goals aligned with student educational needs.

  3. Provide direct and consultative physical therapy services as outlined in student IEPs.

  4. Monitor progress toward goals and provide updates during annual reviews and progress reporting periods.

Therapeutic Intervention

  1. Design and implement individualized treatment plans.

  2. Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to improve:

  3. Gross motor skills

  4. Balance and coordination

  5. Mobility and gait

  6. Postural control

  7. Functional participation in school activities

  8. Recommend environmental adaptations and accommodations that increase student access to instruction.

Collaboration & Consultation

  1. Collaborate with teachers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, nurses, psychologists, and administrators.

  2. Provide recommendations to support student participation in classrooms, playgrounds, and school-related activities.

  3. Consult with families regarding student progress and strategies that support functional success.

Assistive Technology & Equipment

  1. Assess student needs for adaptive equipment and mobility devices.

  2. Assist with the selection, fitting, and monitoring of wheelchairs, walkers, standers, adaptive seating, and other assistive devices.

  3. Train staff and caregivers on proper equipment use and safety procedures.

Documentation & Compliance

  1. Maintain accurate treatment records, service logs, progress reports, and evaluation documentation.

  2. Ensure compliance with IDEA, Illinois State Board of Education regulations, district policies, and Medicaid billing requirements when applicable.

  3. Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and district guidelines.

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to move, lift, and position students safely.

  2. Ability to bend, kneel, reach, and assist with mobility activities throughout the school day.

  3. Ability to operate therapy and adaptive equipment.

Preferred Skills

  1. Experience in a school-based setting.

  2. Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.

  3. Familiarity with multidisciplinary team collaboration.

  4. Strong problem-solving and student advocacy skills.
