Ready to take the next step in your Emergency Department nursing career? This unique full-time RN opportunity is designed for experienced Emergency Department nurses with at least two years of recent ED experience who are interested in joining a dedicated team with a clear pathway to permanent employment at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center.

From day one, you'll be assigned to the Emergency Department at Matthews Medical Center, a fast-paced, full-service emergency department that cares for a diverse patient population across a wide range of acuity levels. The department features 33 patient care beds, 7 triage rooms, and 7 additional low-acuity treatment spaces that can be utilized during periods of high patient volume, creating a dynamic environment where nurses can expand their clinical expertise while working alongside a highly collaborative care team.

Following successful completion of your 90-day to 9-month assignment, you'll have the opportunity to apply and transition into a permanent RN position within the assigned department or into PNRT.

What You'll Do

As a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Matthews Medical Center, you'll provide expert care to patients presenting with a wide variety of emergent, urgent, and complex medical conditions. You'll use critical thinking, clinical judgment, and strong assessment skills to rapidly identify patient needs, prioritize care, and coordinate treatment in a fast-paced environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based emergency nursing care

Assess, triage, and prioritize patients based on clinical presentation and acuity

Care for patients experiencing cardiac events, stroke symptoms, sepsis, respiratory distress, and other medical emergencies

Support the treatment and stabilization of trauma patients, emergent rule-outs, CPR in progress, ROSC patients, and other critical care presentations

Provide nursing care for patients with abdominal pain, orthopedic injuries, lacerations, infectious disease concerns, and a variety of acute and chronic conditions

Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver coordinated care

Administer medications, treatments, and interventions in accordance with established clinical standards

Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions

Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation

Support departmental quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives

Contribute to a positive team culture and collaborative work environment

Build the knowledge, relationships, and clinical expertise necessary for a successful transition into a permanent role within the Emergency Department

What We're Looking For

  • Education: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, preferred. BSN, preferred.

  • Experience: Consecutive year within defined specialty (Med Surg, Tele, Critical Care, ED or Women's), preferred.

  • Licensure/Certification:

  • RN License in Appropriate State, required.

  • NC state approved curricula for restrictive interventions (facility specific) within 3 months of hire for Emergency Departments and Behavioral Health units, required.

  • Specialty Certification, preferred.

  • Additional Skills/Requirements (required):

  • Appropriate customer service, effective and appropriate customer relations, verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, interpersonal relationship skills, conflict resolution, critical thinking and computer literacy. Advanced training as required by department/unit/facility per identified skill set/sub category. Ability to successfully complete generic and department specific skills validation and competency testing. Has the ability to interpret information and identify each patient’s requirement for care relative to his/her age specific need. Has the knowledge and skill necessary to modify care according to patient(s) age.

  • Successfully complete the Cardiac dysrhythmia test or Cardiac dysrhythmia course within 3 months of hire. NIH Stroke Scale certification upon hire.

  • Specialty specific: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) certification for Emergency Services, Behavioral Health and Med Surg RNs; Women’s Services – Breastfeeding course; Labor and Delivery, Antepartum RN —fetal monitoring course and breastfeeding course.
