Full job description

This position is open to current Colorado residents only.

Civil and Forensic Mental Health Services (CFMH) operates Colorado’s two mental health hospitals, the Forensic Services Division, the Division of Mental Health Transitional Living, and now the Outpatient Services Division. The office provides a continuum of mental health care for both Civil and Forensic clients. Civil clients are individuals who are committed by a civil court into the care of the Colorado Department of Human Services because they have serious and persistent mental health conditions. Forensic clients include those who are charged with a crime and have a mental or developmental disability that prevents them from assisting in their own defense or rationally understanding the criminal court proceedings, and those who have been charged with a crime but found not guilty by reason of insanity. CFMH works across the legal system to provide evaluations, treatment and case management for these clients. Outpatient Services is the newest part of this continuum, working to support clients stepping down or being diverted from hospitals and jails, and giving them the care they need in the community. You are required to work at your assigned work location during your scheduled work times. Monday- Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note: Work arrangements are subject to change at any time.

What You'll be Doing:

Clinical Direction/Clinical Supervision/Work Lead:• Responsible for the direction, clinical supervision and of all contracted nursing staff, PRN nursing staff, and QMAP functions of staff of the Clinic.

  • Owns and manages the Clinic-wide duties of medication administration, and communicates personnel needs to leadership immediately.

  • Responsible for working with the leadership to ensure all medication services provided in the Clinic, including by contracted and PRN nurses and QMAPs are delivered correctly.

  • Responsible to ensure all QMAP assignments and duties are completed and in compliance with Clinic policies and psychiatric and medical nursing standards, licensure requirements and governing bodies while working in conjunction with leadership.

  • Oversees and manages PRN and contract nursing scheduling, assignments, and coverage. Clinic staff is notified promptly of changes to processes, policies and procedures through communication methods to include meetings, email and individual contact.

  • Individual coaching sessions are conducted regularly with assigned staff for medication related duties, only.

  • Communication is conducted regularly with other disciplines, department leadership regarding nursing directives and disseminates information as appropriate. Interpretation of other leadership communication is received to understand changes that may or may not directly impact the nursing department.

  • Assign tasks, add to performance plan and evaluation, ensure medical staff scheduling, coaching and mentoring QMAP staff.

Department Standards:

  • maintains nursing standards of care for the Clinic by creating and maintaining processes to communicate and follow up with contract nurses, PRN nurses, and QMAP staff so that standards are kept in compliance.
  • Nursing staff must adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and Clinic Code of Ethics.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new policies, standards, updates, literature related to nursing and specialty areas is maintained and communicated to subordinates. Leadership and supervisors are notified promptly of issues with patients and QMAP staff members.
  • Works collaboratively with all staff and provides assistance when needed.
  • Provides guidance and direction for care and treatment, directs nursing care and communication to clinic personnel.
  • Assures the Clinic is directed and staffed appropriately according to Clinic procedure along with assuring QMAP staffing levels are maintained and accurate.

Patient Care/Nursing Care:• Responsible for the nursing care provided of the Clinic and maintenance of a safe, secure and therapeutic environment.

  • Promptly responds to patient’s psychiatric and/or medical issues, participates in Trauma Informed Care initiatives and understands and promotes its principles, implements, audits and reviews nursing care and QMAP care provided on the shift/unit.

  • This is accomplished through providing follow up for proper nursing care; ie., documentation treatments and/or medications, proper procedure for emergency medical issues of clients, and laboratory services after hours and obtaining data from the AED.

  • Participates and ensures staff correctly identify patients prior to administration of medications, treatments, blood testing, or starting an invasive procedure. Follows and maintains Infection control standards and regulations.

  • Evaluates concerns related to nursing care plans by assessing, identifying, planning, implementing, evaluating, and revising the nursing care given based on the nursing history.

  • Utilize Patient Rights for mental health legal issues and comply with policy and procedure in these areas. Provide intervention in critical situations as necessary.

  • Counsels and educates patients on medications, physical care needs, and psychiatric care needs during group therapies, Plan of Care Reviews, Plan of Care Formulations, 1:1 therapies, talking and educating the patient's family.

  • Utilized to provide support for psychotherapy, daily living skills, and related groups in the clinic.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Any other duties that may need to be completed for the shift/unit and or department.

  • May be floated for coverage needs to specialty areas such as the Ambulatory Clinic/ECT Services only if skilled in these areas AEB a demonstrated competency evaluation.

  • May be asked to cover or help in the absence of a Nurse III or Lead Nurse.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience: Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) and two (2) years of professional experience providing nursing duties/care in a psychiatric/behavioral health/mental health setting. Substitutions Education in nursing will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with individuals with serious mental illness.

  • Experience with nursing oversight and supervision.

  • Bilingual in Spanish.

  • Maintains active and unencumbered Colorado Registered Nurse License

  • Shall not initiate or engage in sexual, social, personal or financial relationships with patients either during or any time after hospitalization, even if the patient requests or initiates such a relationship. All relationships with current or former patients must be disclosed on your application;

  • Successfully pass all modules of the CMHIP New Employee Orientation core curriculum to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete CTI and CPR;

  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

  • Withstand impact on own body using an ASP shield;

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for using a defensive tactic;

  • Kneel on one or both knees and stand up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety;

  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

  • Annual influenza vaccination, other vaccinations as required by the State and facility.

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must:

  • Disclose that information on the application.

  • Explain why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify you from the current position.

  • Provide your employee number from your prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.

CDHS Selection Process Explanation:Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hrs per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a prorated basis to determine qualifications.
