Microservices Team Lead — Platform Engineering
The Role
We are looking for a Microservices Team Lead to lead a cross-domain team of engineers building and operating the services behind TEGNA's content management and streaming platforms. Our content management side runs on Azure — C#/.NET Function Apps with a Service Bus event backbone — while streaming and media content live in AWS (Media services, S3, CloudFront), all Terraform/CDK managed. Reporting to the Platform Engineering Manager, this is a hands-on technical leadership role: you set technical direction, own delivery for your team's services, and grow the engineers you lead. You'll take the tech briefs and epics that flow from our Solutions Architects, break them into well-sequenced work, partnering with the Cloud team for infrastructural requisites.
Responsibilities:
-
Lead a distributed team of microservices engineers (onshore and offshore), owning planning, delivery, code quality, and day-to-day technical direction.
-
Remain hands-on: contribute to design and code for C#/.NET Function Apps, Service Bus messaging flows, and containerized services on Kubernetes.
-
Break down tech briefs and epics from the Solutions Architects into actionable stories, sequencing delivery against both short-term product needs and long-term platform health.
-
Drive engineering practices across the team: code review standards, testing, observability.
-
Own service reliability and performance for your team's domain, including SLAs, incident response, and reducing operational toil.
-
Partner with the Cloud Architect and the Cloud Lead on CI/CD and IaC-managed infrastructure.
-
Mentor and grow engineers at varying experience levels and manage the throughput and quality of individual contributors.
-
Run an Agile/Scrum delivery cadence with disciplined source control across the team.
Requirements:
-
7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading or mentoring a team of engineers.
-
Strong hands-on experience building microservices in C#/.NET, including serverless (Azure Functions or equivalent) and event-driven patterns (Service Bus, queues, pub/sub).
-
Solid understanding of distributed systems (messaging, idempotency, retries, failure handling) and of running services in production (observability, alerting, incident response).
-
Experience with containerized workloads (Docker/Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CDK), and a cloud-native background (Azure and/or AWS).
-
Proven ability to lead agile teams, keeping quality and velocity measurably performant.
-
Strong communication skills across engineering, product, infrastructure, and architecture stakeholders.
-
Media, streaming, or high-traffic consumer platform, or prior CMS experience at scale is a plus.
Why Join TEGNA?
You'll lead a team building modern digital products at real scale, across a rich Azure/AWS hybrid platform. This is an opportunity to shape both the services and the engineering culture that power content management, personalization, and streaming delivery across all of TEGNA's media properties. We are investing heavily in AI-assisted development, modern cloud-native services, and flexible architecture patterns that let our teams innovate quickly while delivering high-quality, high-impact products. Benefits:
TEGNA offers comprehensive benefits designed to safeguard the physical, mental and financial health of our employees and their families. Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.
Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
- Some jobs are covered by a collective bargaining agreement and thus some or all of the benefits described herein may not apply. For example, some newsroom bargaining unit employees receive health and retirement benefits under plans administered by the union.
