Long-Term Substitute

Location: MCSES

Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:00am-3:15pm; Friday 8:00am-3:00pm

Grade(s): K-5

Rate of Pay: Contractual

Anticipated Start Date: October 12, 2026

Long-Term Substitute Teacher — Academic Intervention Services (AIS) Reading

Full-Time, Temporary Assignment

Position Summary

The Long-Term Substitute AIS Reading Teacher provides Academic Intervention Services in reading to students identified as at risk of not meeting the New York State learning standards, assuming full responsibility for an existing AIS caseload in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This position delivers targeted, data-driven reading instruction and ensures continuity of services in accordance with NYSED requirements for Academic Intervention Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, small-group and individual AIS reading instruction to students identified through state assessment results, benchmark data, and building screening criteria.

  • Plan and deliver targeted, evidence-based reading interventions aligned to identified skill gaps and the Next Generation Learning Standards.

  • Monitor and document student progress using progress-monitoring tools, adjusting instruction based on ongoing data.

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align intervention support with core reading instruction.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records, including AIS service logs, progress notes, and required NYSED compliance documentation.

  • Communicate regularly with classroom teachers, families, and building administration regarding student progress.

  • Participate in grade-level, data, and Response to Intervention (RTI) meetings as appropriate.

  • Maintain continuity of instruction, groupings, and routines established by the regular AIS teacher.

Qualifications

  • Valid New York State teaching certification (Childhood Education, Literacy/Reading, or equivalent).

  • Prior experience providing reading intervention or small-group reading instruction preferred.

  • Knowledge of NYSED Academic Intervention Services requirements preferred.

  • Strong instructional planning, data analysis, and communication skills.

  • Ability to begin the assignment promptly and commit to the full duration of the long-term placement.

Assignment Details

This is a full-time, long-term substitute assignment covering an anticipated leave of absence. Start and end dates will be confirmed with the building principal and will follow the district's regular student calendar and schedule.

Terms of Employment

This is a temporary, long-term substitute position compensated on the district's per diem or long-term substitute pay scale, as outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement or board policy.
