Job Description
Our client is seeking a hands-on COBOL Programmer to support and maintain critical IBM Mainframe applications. This role is focused on application support, enhancements, and break-fix work within an established environment. The ideal candidate will be able to ramp up quickly, help preserve institutional knowledge as senior team members retire, and provide stability while the organization prepares for future modernization efforts. Candidates with experience supporting supply chain, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, transportation, or insurance applications are highly preferred.
- Day to Day:
- Support and maintain existing IBM Mainframe applications
- Develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot COBOL programs and JCL jobs
- Investigate production issues, application abends, and batch failures
- Perform root cause analysis and implement fixes
- Support production releases and application enhancements
- Collaborate with business users, analysts, and technical teams
- Assist with knowledge transfer and documentation efforts Help ensure application stability across critical business systems
Skills and Requirements

Must Haves:

3+ years of COBOL development experience

Strong experience with:

COBOL
-
JCL
-
IBM z/OS
-
DB2
-
VSAM
-
TSO/ISPF
-
SQL
-
Experience supporting production mainframe applications
-
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
-
Experience with Endevor, Changeman, or similar source control tools

Ability to quickly learn and support existing applications Plusses:
-
Supply chain, logistics, manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, or insurance industry experience
-
CICS (preferred but not required)
-
File-AID, Easytrieve, or REXX
-
CA-7, Control-M, ZEKE, Redwood, or similar scheduling tools
-
API/web services integration experience
-
Agile/Scrum experience
-
Mainframe modernization or migration experience
-
IMS database experience
