Patient Care Specialist

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

High school degree equivalent. Certification as a labor doula. Certification in CPR. Certification in Malpractice insurance. Certification in Spinning Babies Workshop.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five (5) years of birth doula experience. Knowledge of childbirth processes and postpartum recovery.

Brief Description of Duties:

As a doula, you will play a crucial role in supporting expectant individuals and families through the childbirth process. Your primary responsibilities will include providing continuous emotional and physical support, offering evidence-based information, and helping clients navigate their pregnancy and birthing experience. As a hospital doula, you will play a vital role in enhancing the birthing experience for families, working collaboratively with medical/nursing teams, and providing essential support that empowers them to navigate the complexities of childbirth in a hospital setting. The ideal applicant will have strong interpersonal and communication skills. The ideal applicant will also have empathy and a non-judgmental attitude. The ideal applicant will also have the ability to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals.

Duties:

Prenatal and Post-Partum Support :

  • Provide outpatient doula education in Ambulatory settings (Bohemia, Commack, Lake Grove, Hampton Bays)

  • Act as a liaison for Stony Brook resources for all OBGYN department for doula partnership

  • Assist as mentors for doula partnership

  • Doula software management

Labor Support:

  • Working as a team member utilizing spinning babies’ maneuvers, birthing equipment on the labor and delivery for optimal positioning during labor and birth

  • Utilizing comfort measures and techniques for pain management

  • Provide comfort measure kits to all birthing families.

  • Serve as a resource on the Maternity unit for patients who need additional support

  • Promote a calm environment

Education and Resources

  • Teach childbirth education classes

  • Attend Stony Brooks OBGYN programs to promote doula awareness (i.e Centering Pregnancy) Provide clients with resources, including books, articles, and referrals to other professionals as needed.

Collaboration with Medical Staff:

  • Work closely with obstetricians, nurses, and midwives to ensure coordinated care.

  • Respect and understand hospital policies while advocating for the client’s needs and preferences.

Professional Development:

  • Stay current with the latest research and practices in childbirth and postpartum care.

  • Attend all workshops and training to enhance skills and knowledge that is presented by Doula Partnership

  • Maintain all requirements of certification organization

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
