Description
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Part-Time Human Resources Specialist (20 HOURS) to support our growing workforce and mission-driven culture. This role serves as the primary HR resource for employees and leadership, ensuring compliance with California employment laws while fostering a positive and professional work environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in employee relations, workplace investigations, performance management, and employment law compliance, particularly within California. This individual will be responsible for managing sensitive employee matters, providing HR guidance, and supporting day-to-day HR operations.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Investigations

Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations concerns and workplace issues.

Conduct thorough, impartial workplace investigations related to employee complaints, policy violations, harassment, discrimination, and other personnel matters.

Document findings and provide recommendations for appropriate corrective actions.

Partner with leadership on performance management, corrective action plans, and conflict resolution.
Terminations & Performance Management
-
Manage employee disciplinary processes in accordance with organizational policies and California labor laws.

Provide guidance and support regarding employee separations, terminations, and reduction-in-force activities.

Ensure all termination documentation and processes are compliant and properly administered.
HR Compliance

Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, with a strong emphasis on California labor law.

Advise management on HR best practices, policy interpretation, and legal compliance.

Review and update employee handbook, policies, and procedures as needed.
Employee Support & HR Administration
- Respond to employee questions regarding:
o Benefits and leave programs
o Payroll and compensation inquiries, Paxchex experience preferred
o Workplace policies and procedures
o Employee performance concerns
o General HR-related matters
Requirements
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Minimum 3+ years of progressive Human Resources experience.

Strong working knowledge of California labor laws, wage and hour regulations, leave laws, and employment practices.

Experience conducting workplace investigations and managing employee relations matters.

Experience handling disciplinary actions and employee terminations.
-
Knowledge of benefits administration, payroll practices, and HR compliance.
-
Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
-
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
-
SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred.
Preferred Experience
-
Experience working in a nonprofit, educational, community-based organization, or school environment.
-
Familiarity with organizations serving diverse populations and community programs.

Experience supporting both exempt and non-exempt employees.
