Full job description

The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to hire a detail-oriented and highly motivated Permit Specialist (Engineering Operations Technician) for our District 3 office. In this role, you will take on a dynamic position that helps keep Iowa’s roadways safe, efficient, and well-coordinated through field investigations, permit coordination, right-of-way management, and technical support. Location: Sioux City, Storm Lake or Cherokee Iowa Department of Transportation Offices

Shift Requirements: Monday – Friday, Flex Hours and Teleworking Available

As a Permit Specialist, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and administering the DOT permit program, including utility, access, work in right of way, advertising signs, and plantings in assigned counties.
  • Working with Maintenance supervisors, County and City Engineers, and others to provide a safe and efficient transportation system.
  • Ensuring that public investment in the system infrastructure is protected and preserved.
  • Assisting district staff in Iowa DOT right-of-way management.
  • Reviewing complaints and /or inquiries from outside agencies, legislators, and the public.
  • Visiting project sites.
  • Participating in training opportunities.

Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operators License.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in highway construction, inspection, or surveying.

  2. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in engineering, construction management, or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.

  3. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Construction Technician or Highway Technician Senior.
