Job Duties
The Underwriting Departments are responsible for maintaining and continuing a profitable book of business while working closely with the Loss Control Department whose essential function is to physically inspect properties to offer additional information/recommendations to aid in coverage determinations. The Commercial Department works with the insurance needs of many different types of business while the Farm Department works with farms and rural properties and the Personal Lines Department focuses on insurance for individuals and families. These departments are in frequent contact with independent agents who sell our product providing clarification on rules, guidelines, and policy language.
North Star Mutual Insurance Company is looking for applicants for our spring 2027 Underwriting internship. Students will have the opportunity to review new business applications and changes along with maintaining and reviewing existing insurance policies. Mastering top notch customer service skills through written and oral communication with stakeholders, participating in rate review meetings, and gaining an overall understanding of the insurance underwriting profession are key functions of this well-rounded internship experience. Other duties/projects may be assigned.
Individuals with strong analytical skills, problem solving ability and exceptional communicators are encouraged to apply. Interns may be exposed to confidential Company information and must be able to maintain that throughout and following their experience at North Star.
Minimum Education Required
The pursuit of an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in business, agriculture, or a related field is preferred for this internship.
Minimum Experience Required
Preference will be given to students enrolled in the North Star Mutual School of Business at Southwest Minnesota State University.
