Job Description

Phlebotomist I

Location: KYP052 - 175 S ENGLISH STATION RD 229 Boulevard

Duration- 4 months

Shift Hours: 8:30-5, Monday-Friday.

Job Summary

The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, update patient information, and perform other assigned duties.

Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture (blood drawing) process and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, as required.

Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

Fully understand physicians' orders.

Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.

Package specimens for transport.

Store specimen samples according to required temperature.

Place samples in the appropriate collection container/tube.

Accurately label specimens and follow procedures specific to the required protocol for transport to maintain specimen integrity.

Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

Attend annual department trainings.

Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed, as required in some states.

Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

High School Diploma or GED.

0-2 years of experience.

Additional Position Details

Daily Draw Volume: 20-30 draws.

Work Environment: Collect specimens from pediatric to geriatric patients.

Location Type: IOP location.

Specialty: Must be able to draw all ages.

Work Arrangement: Will be working as part of a team.

Training: 1st week.

Required Skills

Draw blood specimens and register patients.

At least 6 months of diagnostic phlebotomy experience.

Maintain accurate patient/specimen logs.

Comfortable working as a team and as an individual.

Good communication skills.

Preferred Skills

Patient-centered care skills.

Diagnostic background.
