PAY RANGE:

Staff Engineer: $93,400 - $116,800 - $140,200

Sr Engineer: $94,600 - $126,500 - $157,600

Lead Engineer: $111,400 - $148,500 - $185,600

Principal Engineer: $116,200 - $154,900 - $193,600

Company Overview: Wolf Creek Generating Station is Kansas' first nuclear power generating station, providing electric generation for Evergy and KEPCo. Wolf Creek has been safely providing clean, reliable energy to the citizens of Kansas and Missouri since 1985. The plant generates about 1,200 megawatts of electricity, which is enough energy to power more than 800,000 homes.

What we are looking for: Wolf Creek has an immediate opening for a full-time Mechanical Engineer, to work within the Capital Engineer Modifications Design Engineering Group based in Burlington, KS. This position will be assigned to the Capital Engineering Modifications group and will be the Responsible Design Engineer for various large scale modifications at Wolf Creek. More details are provided below.

Scheduled Work Hours/Location: We offer a 4-day work week, Monday – Thursday, with a hybrid remote option to work from home up to 25% of the time. Additional hours may be required to support planned and unplanned outages, projects, emergent plant conditions, and general station needs. Many of our employees commute from nearby cities, with Burlington being the nearest town 10 minutes away. Wolf Creek Generating Station is approximately 40 minutes from Emporia, 60 minutes from Topeka, 45 minutes from Ottawa, and 75 minutes from Olathe.

Job Specific Functions:

The Capital Modification Engineer will provide technical support and engineering expertise for designing and implementing the assigned modifications at Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical oversight to enforce requirements on Engineering support contractors and Major Equipment Suppliers.

  • Promote safety and contribute to a positive team culture.

  • Support multi-disciplinary, multi-year capital projects with high complexity and value.

  • Evaluate mechanical system designs including piping layouts, rotating equipment, heat exchangers, and auxiliary systems.

  • Review and develop specifications for major mechanical equipment.

  • Advise on equipment layout and reliability improvements.

  • Participate in vendor evaluations and ensure technical compliance.

  • Witness FATs for critical mechanical components monitor delivery schedules and inspect mechanical installations including piping, valves, and rotating equipment alignment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

The Staff Engineer position requires a BS degree in Engineering and four years relevant.

The Senior Engineer position requires a BS degree in Engineering and eight years of relevant experience and registered engineering in training (EIT) or board recognized industry certification preferred.

The Lead Engineer position requires a BS degree in Engineering and fourteen of relevant experience and a Kansas Professional Engineer License is preferred .

Relevant experience for these positions is defined as professional level experience in engineering, engineering support or nuclear plant operations and support. The incumbent must possess engineering expertise related to the general area of assignment such as electrical, mechanical, civil, nuclear, etc.

Curriculum must be accredited by the accreditation board for engineering and technology (ABET): Any other baccalaureate engineering curriculum that has not been accredited by ABET but has been evaluated and found to be of an equivalent standard that may be reviewed and accepted by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions is acceptable.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical power distribution systems, and equipment used in power generation or highly regulated industrial facilities.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents, drawings, calculations, specifications, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to evaluate complex technical issues, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and develop practical, defensible engineering solutions.

  • Knowledge of nuclear corrective action, configuration management, design control, equipment reliability, and regulatory processes is preferred.

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively with plant personnel, management, vendors, and external organizations.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, schedules, and stakeholders.

This position requires the ability to: Comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory; work with concepts such as limits, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

This position requires the ability to: apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases; deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) registration or Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

  • Due to the nature of work at a nuclear generating station, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.

  • Candidates must satisfy applicable site access, fitness-for-duty, and training requirements.

Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to pass vision requirements associated with Company physical in order to read detailed engineering prints and drawings and inspect equipment installations and job sites.

This position requires the ability to work in a moderately noisy environment (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Plant walkdowns and field inspections may require work in radiologically controlled areas and other industrial areas. Wolf Creek Generating Station operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Periodic off-normal support may be required for outages, emergent equipment conditions, projects, or regulatory issues.
