Job Description
Stanford University is seeking an experienced Financial Manager 1 to serve as the senior financial and operational partner for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' Child and Sleep clinical portfolios. This position manages finance staff and leads complex divisional work involving budgeting and forecasting, faculty and staff compensation, provider productivity and clinical effort, hospital funds flow, protected time, incentive support, clinical program planning, trainee and GME expenses, executive reporting and cross-entity financial operations.
The Clinical Finance Manager works closely with Division Chiefs, faculty leaders, Department administration and finance partners across Stanford Medicine. The position is responsible for translating complex financial, productivity, staffing and operational information into clear recommendations; identifying and resolving issues that cross organizational boundaries; and ensuring that leadership decisions are implemented through accurate budgets, forecasts, dashboards, financial transactions and operating procedures.
The successful candidate will bring strong people-management experience, advanced financial and analytical skills, sound judgment and the ability to operate effectively in a complex academic medical environment. This role requires more than report preparation. The Financial Manager must understand the operational meaning of the data, challenge inconsistencies, quantify risk, recommend solutions and communicate effectively with senior clinical and administrative leaders.
Duties include:
-
Manage and develop finance staff supporting the Child and Sleep clinical portfolios, including assignment of work, technical review, coaching, performance management, cross-training and succession coverage.
-
Lead annual budgeting, rolling forecasting and ongoing financial management for assigned divisions, programs and clinical activities.
-
Advise leadership on financial performance, clinical staffing, faculty deployment, provider productivity, protected time, compensation-related matters, hospital support and program sustainability.
-
Direct provider and divisional reporting involving wRVUs, clinical FTE, patient volume, revenue, labor, operating expense, funds flow and margin.
-
Resolve complex financial and operational issues involving the Department, School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, GME and external partners.
-
Establish and maintain controls for high-risk or judgment-intensive processes, including cross-entity funding, provider productivity adjustments, faculty effort, trainee expenses and financial transactions.
-
Lead financial planning for new or changing clinical programs, including staffing, volume, productivity, revenue, reimbursement, startup funding and post-launch monitoring.
-
Improve dashboards, reporting methods, account structures and recurring workflows through standardization, documentation, appropriate automation and clear ownership.
-
Represent the Department in internal and external financial discussions and communicate decision-ready recommendations to senior leadership.
