Full job description
Under the general supervision of the SCDOT SHEP Responder Supervisor or the SHEP Manager, serves as a member of a specialized technical workforce of Traffic Incident Responders. Responds to traffic incidents and assists emergency responders by implementing required traffic control and other associated tasks. Travels assigned routes, assisting emergency response agencies during incidents, clearing travel lanes of disabled vehicles and debris. Knows and utilizes all detour routes in District 4 off of I-77 and I-85. Aids stranded motorists on assigned routes in a courteous manner and according to stated policies of SCDOT. Clears travel lanes to keep stranded motorist as safe as possible.
Assists the Traffic Management Center (TMC) District 4 by providing updated field information on traffic conditions and incidents. Ability to correspond with the TMC during active incidents, lane closures, weather events, etc. Operates power tools and assorted hand tools. Operates various equipment to include small engine air compressors, jumper cables and mat jacks. Responsible for maintaining assigned equipment to include keeping the vehicles clean both inside and out.
Records activities for reporting purposes. Fills out various reports including waiver for push/pull, transportation of individuals and major incident reports. Performs duties as required in emergency situations and/or during adverse weather (hurricane, flooding, ice/snow). May be required to respond to assignments in other districts as needed. Assists the shift supervisor. Fills in as the shift supervisor as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: Employee must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. This position requires corrected 20/20 vision. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise on a daily basis. Work environment is generally in a truck and in close proximity to heavy and fast-moving traffic.
