Full job description

Description We are looking for a Controller to support a nonprofit organization in Falmouth, Maine through a Contract engagement. This role combines hands-on financial oversight with detailed document management, making it ideal for someone who can balance accounting accuracy with strong organizational discipline. The position will play an important part in maintaining reliable financial records, supporting close activities, and ensuring critical documentation is properly compiled and accessible.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily accounting activities for a nonprofit environment, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Manage month-end closing tasks, including journal entries, account analysis, and preparation of supporting financial documentation.

  • Perform account reconciliations to identify discrepancies, resolve variances, and maintain the integrity of financial records.

  • Support financial planning efforts by preparing reports, organizing data, and assisting with budget-related analysis.

  • Administer grant accounting processes by tracking funding activity, monitoring restrictions, and maintaining appropriate supporting records.

  • Coordinate document control activities by organizing, compiling, and maintaining financial and operational files for easy retrieval.

  • Handle document scanning and digitization efforts to improve record retention and ensure important materials are stored accurately.

  • Prepare clear financial information and supporting schedules for internal review, audits, or leadership requests as needed. Requirements • At least 5 years of experience in accounting, controllership, or related financial management roles.

  • Background in nonprofit accounting with an understanding of grant-related financial tracking and reporting.

  • Proven ability to complete account reconciliations and support accurate month-end close processes.

  • Experience with financial planning, budgeting support, and preparation of management reports.

  • Strong document control and document scanning experience, with attention to accuracy and organization.

  • Ability to compile, maintain, and retrieve records in both physical and digital formats.

  • High level of attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive financial information with professionalism.
